So,i just installed MSSE on my pc,i used NOD32 before this but i was really anxious and curious to try out this software.Everything looks and works ok-ish,BUT...i noticed in processes that MsMpEng.exe sometimes randomly, even in idle puts my cpu and 40-50% usage. Now that kinda bothers me....Is it ok if i set it to manual from services.msc or stop it...Or what can i do ? Cause i don't really like this thing just using up almoste half of my CPU when he wants randomly ( And this happens like from 5 to 5 minutes )

LE: So eventually i uninstalled MSSE and went back to my old AV until i get a more clearer look about this problem.Another thing that determined the uninstallation of MSSE is: When i accessed control panel my MsMpEng.exe took my CPU to 80%,now that really bothered me :D

No, youl need that running for the proper functioning of the software. Its probably just scanning files when your computer is idle.

Looks like the UPGRADE function is now working. I believe it will also do it through Windows Update.

If you want to stay in the beta program .. don't go up to 1961!

I just read this over on the newsgroups ..

Build 1.0.1961.0 is the first public update released to MSE v1 users.
It is exactly the same build as 1.0.1959.0 used by this beta group,
except some text changes in the license agreement. Based on your help
and feedback, we have decided that this build has reached a level of
quality that allows us to release it to the broader user base.
Therefore 1.0.1959.0 beta users did not receive the
upgrade.

Please don't install the publicly available version as it will cause
you to leave this beta group. The version that you are using is
flagged as a beta build and allows us to send you upgrades for future
beta versions.

Thank you for your cooperation,
The Microsoft Security Essentials Team
Microsoft moving in mysterious ways as usual .. they could at least have given us beta testers a bit of notice about this!

So previously, my MSE would update itself automatically as far as definitions. Now, I think there was an update to the program itself via Windows Update. Once that has installed, I keep getting the Windows Update notification for definition updates instead of MSE just installing them automatically. Anybody know how to fix it and not rec'v Windows Update notifications on a daily basis (sometimes 3 times per day) for MSE definitions?

My MSE version is:

Microsoft Security Essentials Version: 1.0.1961.0
Antimalware Client Version: 2.1.6519.0
Engine Version: 1.1.5502.0
Antivirus definitions: 1.77.911.0

I noticed that today also. I heard they were working on the update feature and had not turned it on prior to this release. I assume they have now turned on the update/upgrade feature and this is the new way of getting updates. I assume also that if you just ignore the update MSE will auto update when you have it scheduled. The advantage to using the Windows Update is it may update more often.

Phone Man:

I have also noticed this issue. On earlier versions, my definitions would auto update every 36 to 48 hours with NO intervention from me.

Since the upgrade to 1961 yesterday, I get a notice that new definitions are available. If I click on the notice, I am taken to Windows Update where I can download the new definition.

Not good. I went to Windows Update but deliberately chose not to update there.

I preferred the prior method where I would get new definitions with no action on my part.

I do not use scheduled scans.

My current definitions are 1.77.850 and are approaching 36 hours old.

We shall see within the next day or so if I am auto-updated or forced to go to Windows Update. I don't understand why they would change the default behavior with 1961.

I had read that MS was releasing updates 3 times a day and that MSE would only update about once a day depending on some unknown time frame. I will wait and see if Windows Update keeps up with the 3 times a day schedule or something different. The update I got this afternoon was 1.77.911.0 and was released at 4:09 am this morning. Only time will tell.

I think this is a bad move on MS' part. The Windows Update notification is annoying on a daily basis. The old MSE update process was seamless and required no user intervention. MS is ignoring the bulk of advanced users who do not have Windows Update set to install automatically.

I'm seriously thinking of downgrading MSE and then ignoring / hiding the program update. Thoughts?

Alright, i'll try the same. Right now I have the WU notification for new definition files. I've got the 1.77.970 files right now. Lets see what happens if I ignore it for 24 hours.

EDIT: in the last 20 minutes, MSE must have updated itself, so the WU notification is gone, for now. ignatzatsonic, did you get a WU notification today for the .990 files?

EDIT 2: WU notification popped up again for the new definition .1038 files. What a real pain in the a$$.

I do find the new WU update format for MSE to be annoying. I liked downloading the files whenever I wanted, rather than having an annoying pop=up show up every morning I start my computer.

Slight correction to my post.

I DO get the popup notification in my system tray telling me about a new update available. It seems to happen shortly after I start up for the day.

I always ignore it.

But I am upgraded to new definitions automatically even though I ignore the notice.

I have been updated to 1.77.1038 in the last few minutes. I started my PC for the day for the first time about 30 minutes ago.

I'd prefer not to get this popup even though it can be ignored. I assume the only way to do that is to set Windows Update to not even check for updates. I may or may not try that. I periodically go to WU manually anyway.

Pay AV companies biting the bullet.

I wonder what companies like Norton and McAffy (are they still around?) are going to do in retaliation , if anything. I guess they will just have to bite the bullet because who is going to pay $40+ a year when they can get MSE for free?
