I also wonder about that. Maybe the negative feedback would have been too much. Some people find certain gadgets to be useful such as the resource monitor gadget, clock gadget etc. I myself used to run the resource monitor gadget (it shows cpu and ram usage). Nowadays I just check task mgr, since it doesn't take much effort at all to open it.
Also there are custom gadgets, avast for example has a gadget, you can run a scan from it, update the database etc. Not sure if it's still there.
Once I heard about the potential security risks about the gadgets I disabled them. And I don't miss them at all, they are all gimmicks at most.
