I also wonder about that. Maybe the negative feedback would have been too much. Some people find certain gadgets to be useful such as the resource monitor gadget, clock gadget etc. I myself used to run the resource monitor gadget (it shows cpu and ram usage). Nowadays I just check task mgr, since it doesn't take much effort at all to open it.

Also there are custom gadgets, avast for example has a gadget, you can run a scan from it, update the database etc. Not sure if it's still there.

Once I heard about the potential security risks about the gadgets I disabled them. And I don't miss them at all, they are all gimmicks at most.

Try again with version 13. One thing before installing delete the one xml file that somewhat controls the gadgets. Sorry, can't remember the exact name of the file. I don't have that file, I don't have windows live email installed.

My keyboard, a Logitech G510s, has a small LCD display on it that is able to display the CPU and RAM usage with an older keyboard's applet. I use Core Temp (use the U.S. Mirror) to monitor the core temperature of each core of my CPU with a small display in the notification area on my taskbar. Core Temp has an applet that would allow monitoring my core temperatures on the keyboard's LCD but I find it easier to read in the notification area on my primary monitor. I've also caught problems when I noticed the CPU and RAM running high on the LCD and when my CPU temps run higher than the known load would justify.

The only gadgets I use are a third party Desktop Calendar (much better than the one from M$) and the desktop monitor for my UPS that can be set to display one of various parameters in addition to remaining run time on the battery; I have the UPS monitor set to show Input voltage (mains voltage) since low mains voltage is often an issue during the summer although I occasionally switch it over to Wattage to see what my computer, monitors, and the HDMI splitter I feed my primary monitor and the TV with are drawing (right now, it's 225W; the voltage is 118v). I consider both of these gadgets to be essential. I could replace the calendar with something else but I like the one I have better than any others I've tried. The only other option to monitor my UPS eats up way too much screen real estate. While my UPS will automatically boost low line voltage if it dips too low (which it does occasionally, I like knowing when it happens so I have the option of shutting off my A/C and refrigerator if it happens for too long before the low voltage can damage them (I live in an older mobile home park that's underpowered).

Kaspersky has always been the champ in finding trojans. But it is not easy to deal with it. MSE is easy but it never finds anything. I still use it, LOL, but I do most of my internet work from a virtual Linux system.

The country of origin may have something to do with the efficiency of Kaspersky...:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

That's the reason I can't bring myself to use it. China has a good one too but, come on, really? I just can't use it.

I run MSE with various system settings and it never finds anything either. I think that's good! I run MBAM once a week and it doesn't find anything. About twice a month, I run Emsisoft EK and it doesn't find anything either. So for me, the fact that they don't find anything is good. Why should I change?

Do you have any other choice for these anti-virus outfits that use annual subscriptions? I've always used free anti-virus and my Malwarebytes is the old "lifetime" variety.

I've heard Kaspersky can be hell to get away from----reports of them continuing to charge credit cards for renewals even when the customer wants to move to another product.

Not only Kaspersky does that. Norton does the same. You have to unsubscribe to the renewals.

When I did buy anti virus programs I always got them from a Brick and Mortar store with cash.
Then remove all of the old anti virus program and install the new anti virus program with the new key.
Because the company didn't have a credit card number, email address or any other personal information I was left alone for a year.
It has been a while sense I have paid for a anti virus program it might of changed.

Because I have 2 life time Malwarebytes I have no problems with them.
I get my updates and upgrades without a hassle.

The brick and mortar stores used to offer Norton NIS for free. Once in a while that was in the Sunday ads. You paid $69.95 and got a MIR for $70. At the end all I paid was the 6% sales tax. But such deals I have not seen in a while.

That technically against the credit card policy. in the U.S. (See below for an example)
It should work online if you can registered the prepaid and/or gift card online. That why some U.S. Social Security issued pre-paid debit cards have trouble working online, I don't think they can be registered.

The key is proper signage and your merchant provider must route the cards correctly.

That's one of the reasons why you should use "ShopSafe", or similar programs from credit card companies. The basic principal of ShopSafe is to generate a credit card number at the bank's website, with limited amount/funds and expiration date. I am probably dating myself, but seems to recall a JAVA applet at the beginning of the online stores that could generate a valid credit card number for a bank of your specification. Mind you, at the beginning there had been no "instant" verification of the credit card number.

ShopSafe is pretty much the same nowadays within the controlled confinement of the bank, that issued you a credit card. I've been using it for long time and never worry about data breaches, even when they'd notify me. The Shopsafe credit card number is probably expired long time ego, nor does it have funding available....
