You can actually change that to another non-Microsoft email and you don't need to provide a mobile phone. That how I had been using window 10 preview and our outlook emails.

Thanks. I was just grousing. Actually I recently found mail.com. No muss no fuss just pick a username and password and you are good to go.

It wouldn't be so bad but to update my mobile info to the new number I have to get by the security which wants to call me on my old mobile number to prove I am me. To make it worse I have another account and the security info has the new mobile number and knows the other user id, but it won't tell it the new mobile number. Some things still need a person who gets the idea I suppose. But it's real Catch 22 City. Sending stuff via Contact Us is a waste of time. There's never a response.

Windows 7 is Microsoft at its PEAK. Everything came together at exactly the right time. The hardware became powerful enough to run the OS and then some. Graphics cards got incredibly powerful. Memory prices became stable and lower (DDR 3 especially) Hard drives got bigger and bigger and have remained stable price wise aside from a few hiccups. Flatscreen displays gave computer users their desks back so we got at least another monitor. The software is a pleasure to use. Windows 7 HP and above looks very nice with aero.
Then along came the mobile revolution and they threw out the code for most of the desktop aero instead of really pretty icons they want us to use 2 colour icons with an OS that would look in place in 1992. The way they have depricated Windows 7 to 8 and finally to 10 makes me feel like Windows 7 is more valuable to me than a free upgrade to the crap looking Windows 10. I would not pay for Windows 10 looking like it does now and certainly won't be downgrading any of my nice Windows 7 machines to run it. I'll use it on a virtual machine but I still have not decided if I am going to give up my Windows 8.1 with media center that I have dual booting to on 2 of my main machines.
The nail in Windows 10 for me was the fact that Microsoft has been asked by tens of thousands of users for a Default Windows 2000 mode and also a Windows 7 Aero mode and have just completley ignored the users. That is absolutely fine as I am completely ignoring Windows 10. I have told my family if they install it on their computers they are on their own
I am sticking with Windows 7. After 7 goes end of life I'll run it without internet access if I need to. I am looking at Linux mint which is a nice cool green color instead of M$ garish blue.

W10 would be better if MS had stuck with blue, instead of using white.

That is the whole point actually. Microsoft wants to be an even more closed operating system for multiple reasons:

-Malware is a lot harder to infect machines when the only way to install software is through an official store.
-Updates and apps are tightly monitored, making sure Microsoft can keep windows quality at a higher level then before.
-They can then start subscriptions with windows where every device gets free updates provided your a member. They will probably throw in office and other goodies to increase the "value".

I do not like this one bit, as windows is going to be a platform where it will be closed like apple. I understand the malware aspect, and honestly that part is great. But things are defiantly going downhill from here.

One could not find a more concise characterization of Linux. Bill Gates did one thing right: he made computing available to the non-techie. Of course in doing so he dumbed down the OS for those who could have used more control. There ought to be a balance between working out of the box and the ability to get under the hood for advanced functions. I think the lack of the former has held Linux back up to this point, but now, finally, it's beginning to surmount that.

I've spend 98% of the last week on Mint (mate) in a VM on Win7, and aside from the limitations of the VM, it has performed fine (except for some exacerbating fstab bugs, aamof). Working on Linux concurrently alongside Windows is enabling me to make the transition, and I think I will finally be able to do so.

It really concerns me when software giants want to know my cell phone number. My home phone wasn't enough. What? That is when I left FB. I really don't need Zuckerberg knowing details about my life. Google and MS are little better. Things are getting out of hand and Linux seems to be the best way to keep it simple.

It is always in the name of security that they intrude into your living space. Also some of the "security questions" sites ask during login are a bit bizarre. It seems more aimed at compiling a family history than determining your identity. I don't even know my uncle's middle name never mind my grandfather's. But they seem to think this is a valid security question. It would only be valid if anything other than a blank response triggered sending the police as only the guy trying to steal my identity would know more about me than I do.
