I'm not sure about this. It could possibly be done with a macro, but I haven't got any experience of creating these.

One way to do this would be via Find. If you set Word to find ^# then it will find every digit in the document and tell you how many there are.

However, if you want to count how many numbers (so that, for example, 456 counts as one number, not three), then it would be more difficult. You'd need to know the length of the longest number in your document. As an example, if the longest number has four digits in it, you start by counting how many three digit strings there are, then the two digit strings, then the one digit strings:

  1. Find ^#^#^# and note down the result - call it a.
  2. Find ^#^# and note down the result - call it b.
  3. Find ^# and note down the result - call it c.
  4. The total number of separate numbers is given by (c-b-a).
Hope this helps :)

If you're dealing with numbers with decimal points in them, it gets more complicated...

dwarf, when i got your email about a macro, i thought how would i do it (i have many macros that i wrote), and i thought of find, before i got a chance to do it, "clunkfish" already did the whole thing.

thank you very much, have been looking for this for a very long time, and for some reason did not cross my mind the macro option.
