MIDI out

MIDI files on my computer play through the sound card. I found a driver for a Roland UM-2 interface and successfully installed it. That now is connected through USB; but the MIDI files still do not come out through the interface--just through the sound card. How can I direct MIDI files to play through the external interface? Thank you

The Roland is a MIDI interface unit, but its not a MIDI Synthesizer. You are probably using the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth to play and its going to the sound card.

In order to get just MIDI out, which is a digital file, not an actual music file, you would have to route the MIDI file to the Roland and then to an external MIDI Synth (and then to whatever audio device).

Exactly what do you want to do with the MIDI files?

Exactly. I am trying to get MIDI signals to go through the interface to play a Kawai G-2 piano equipped with Pianodisk. Way back in XP there was a choice on the audio control panel that allowed one to direct MIDI files to play in the internal synthesizer or to direct them externally to an interface to drive a synthesizer. That option dissappeared with Vista and is still missing in Win 7. That's what I am trying to do--get the MIDI signals to appear on the USB connected interface. Got the driver working and it is seen by the computer--just can't get the signals to go through the interface.

I'm not sure how to do that in Win 7. I have a recording studio (using Sonar X1 software) and use MIDI but its all internal within Sonar or with an external MIDI keyboard input. Or, I have Band in a Box but its also all within BIAB. Seems to me you would need some type of MIDI "player" that would route the MIDI files to where you want to go.
