I'm not sure if you can find one as low as $200 but you can get netbooks, wifi with a keyboard, for under $400

Here is one just under $300 SUS Eee PC Seashell 1005HA-EU1X-BK

I would not kick it. With Linux it works quite nicely.
like i said i'd run damn small linux and it'd be a speedy little machine, but i think those specs are gonna be slow with the xp it's got loaded on it

Yeah, but it is really easy to kick XP off and load any Linux distro. I think it also comes with linux and was even a little cheaper - i remember that vaguely.

yeah he said all he wanted was something cheap that he could take notes with and get online, it's got built in wireless, and it's slightly smaller than the standard netbook. really for his needs this could be quite adaquate, i just wonder why they added a ssd instead of a small hdd. only thing i can think of is to conserve battery power.

Yes, the SSD needs a lot less power which is good given the tiny battery. Also, the SSD does not break when you drop it - no head crashes. And for a device that is being logged around all the time that is an advantage.

Hi all
an even better idea might possible be to take out a Mobile Phone contract -- some of these now throw in a FREE laptop of the type you are looking for.

If you use a mobile phone (and there can't be many who don't have at least one these days) you can "kill 2 birds with one stone" by going for one of these deals.

Cheers

but the service you have to sign up for to get those is horrible. my sister signed up for verizon's service with her own laptop and is paying about $70-$75 a month after adding in taxes and additional fees and has 5gb.

Hi there
over in Europe there are decent deals to be had on this type of service -- however in your case at 70 - 80 USD per month --yes I agree it's not a viable option.
Usually stuff is a lot cheaper in the US - so I'm surprised at that -- you *might* be able to find something cheaper.

Don't forget if you travel a lot the " 3G Data USB" card is thrown in as well -- means you can use the Internet wherever a decent mobile phone connection is available -- all included in the fee and can be a lot cheaper than paying extortionate Hotel WiFI fees.

On the surface however - doesn't look as good a deal as you can get in Europe.

Cheers
jimbo
