missing: almost 45 gb of hard drive space

why system restore? i dont have too many system restores to go back to, since i reformatted recently

and disk cleanup only showed 25000 kb, so that didnt help

and where's the 'security' button? im using xp

and although the system restore is at max, it should only take up 17gb at most on that drive, so thats not it

should i just reformat the drive?

After some thought,, a statement and a some questions...

This is not a normal Windows System Folder of any kind, to the very best of my knowledge. You will never see a folder on any drive that is created by Windows with that name, again, to the best of my knowledge. So my apologies for missing this.

1. What AntiVirus / Malware Scanners / Spyware Scanners are you running?

2. What Version of XP? Home, Media Center or Pro

You might just have to back up your data and format the drive, but if some app (AV probably) is creating this folder,, it will just do so again. If you do reformat and the folder is created again, You will need to find out what is creating this folder to try and prevent it in the future.

im using microsoft security essentials. ive found all the others useless (and sometimes a pain to use)

os is xp home

the drive is not my primary drive. i only connect it when i back stuff up
and that folder in the quote was from spacemonger. i cannot see the folder itself

Ok,, XP Home does not have a security Tab.

Unfortunately, someone more versed in XP Home Security Settings will have to provide further instructions.

But, to see the drive.... Open Explorer

Click on Tools / Folder Options / View tab
Select "Show Hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
Click OK

Now you should be able to see the folder on that drive.

You need to unhide that folder, probably set as "System". Easy way: load Linux, any modern Linux can read/write NTFS, delete it using Linux... That ought to fix your problem...

i'm also missing roughly 65gb of hard drive space. i just reformatted my computer to windows 7 home edition and deleted all of the old windows files. i have about 209 gb of space, but only 125 available; if i weigh in all of my programs, etc. i am still missing around 65gb. i also tried scanning my hard drive with spacemonger, and it said 65.7gb unscanned items (3 unscannable folders). where are these folders coming from?

Hello friends. I'm having the same issue only there is no back-up issue. The full 500 GB was there then suddenly poof! 35 GB gone. I am running Windows 7. Please help ! ! !
