Using Autoruns, I was inspecting my startup files & noted that the rdpclip.exe file was enabled, but Autoruns told me that the file is missing. I have never consciously deleted said file & don't go around doing such things willy-nilly.

In Autoruns I right clicked & chose to 'search internet' & found info that it is a needed tool...

I would love to know under which directory it belongs & fm where / how I can get it back. Tried the Recycle bin already, to no avail.... using Win7 x64 Home Premium... any way I can extract the file fm some sort of cabinet?

TIA, elisedai

You should find it in C:\Windows\System32, there's an rdpclip.exe and rdpclip.exe.mui file. A system restore might put you back to where it was if you can't find it.

dpclip.exe is the main executable for File Copy.\r It is provides function for Terminal Services server that allows you to copy and paste between server and client. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated It normally resides in C:/windows/system32..

Thanks to all for the input...I was able to restore... but if not- I'm curious... would it be posible to extract said file fm a .cab file or something like that fm the install disk & also- what would the date be for rdpclip.exe file? Also, as a matter of curiosity- why didn't Win7 find this prob? TIA elisedai

If you had done a Ghost backup of your C: drive, you could restore that file or any file from your last backup, using Ghost Explorer.

I've not had to do that often, but when I've needed it, having a Ghost backup of my C: drive has really saved the day.

That's one reason why I say, "Backup! Backup! Backup!" and never loose a file again.

Good Luck,
The Doctor

Hello Elisedai,

Yes, you would be able to extract the file needed from your retail Windows 7 installation disc if you needed to, then copy it back into your current installation. :)

Hope this helps,

I have the same issue with the newest version of Autoruns. This is a personal pc, I do not use remote desktop routinely but have with HP's helpdesk. Autoruns says it can't find the file, but I can. It is on my machine in the windows\winsxs folder. My only question is why can't autoruns find it?

file not found in autorun either but i can access it from registry editor, however i don't know if it's working or not... shouldn't this be a startup process? i know it to be a core part of system. i'm a bit computer illiterate when it comes to this stuff so this is as far as i got... any tips would be nice. if i have to restore that's fine, but also read remote desktop as another way to fix this. been experiencing problems from running slowing to cursor jumping, all drivers are updated and fine, no virus (even manually checked for vundo trojan, how i found this problem). Any insight would help me with this headache. Thanks

Same here in so far that my reading also shows it that it should be in C:\Windows\System32 and it isnot there. I too like genej101 have it in 2 places in the windows\winsxs folder. I too would like to know why autoruns and therefore the registry thinks ot should be there and not in the in the windows\winsxs folder. Therefore to answer genej101, "Why can't autoruns find it" the answer would be 'it's because the registry does NOT have it listed to be in that folder.' The real question to me then is why is there no registry entry pointing to this folder (or pointing to this folder instead of C:\Windows\System32). Mine is a 2-weeks old, fresh install of windows with only legit legal software installed and only a handful of them, not many. Also if this service allows you to copy and paste between server and client then does this mean if one is using his PC at home (along with a laptop) then it isn't needed?.

Having surfed on this issue and finding confusion here, I believe the answer is as simple as "rdpclip is not activated in W7 Home Premium, only Pro/Enterprise/Ultimate" so folks in this thread responded differently.

Although Home Premium can act as a Client, it doesn't work as a Server, and rdpclip is Server functionality. But MS has left the registry for server services intact despite that HP doesn't use it, thus Autoruns finds it there and reports it. I went to my HP Registry entry and deleted the value "rdpclip" so it doesn't appear in yellow in Autoruns--I'll surely report back if I experience any problems at all in doing this.
