Hi all,

I've reached my wits' end. I just recently did a complete windows 7 reinstall because I purchased a Kingston HyperX 3K. Love the speeds and everything. I tried to reinstall my programs the same way as before because I was comfortable with those settings and loved them.

However, after extra research, I found that a lot of people suggested the K-lite codec pack, rather than the communist one. Both come with some version of media player classic and that's fine with me because that is my preferred media player for my .mkv files and .mp4 files. I always have used the communist pack with no problem, but I thought I'd give K-lite a try. Installation went fine, and the player worked fine.

Then I realized that I could no longer see thumbnails, or the extra information about the file in Windows Explorer. I researched this issue all over different forums and I tried as many K-lite related solutions as possible (changing decoders, enabling thumbnail extraction, clearing thumbnail cache, etc) but none worked. I also installed DivX because that was a suggested solution as well, but that didn't work either.

So I tried hopping back to the communist pack, after uninstalling K-lite. Still no thumbnails or details about the file. Tried a bunch of solutions related to that pack as well, and still no avail.

I don't know what I've done in past solutions to get things working because I never had this thumbnail issue before. I could have sworn all I've ever done is customize the default programs, and uncheck the options to include a desktop icon. Outside of that, I have no idea what I did to generate the thumbnails. At this point, I've uninstalled all the K-lite, divx, and communist codecs from my machine. The only media player I have installed is the Windows Media Player that came with Windows 7. Can anyone provide me a working solution that lets me play my .mkv files with Media Player Classic and still view thumbnails?

I really appreciate the help. Thank you all in advance.

i was about to suggest icaros,
but if you want codecs and mkv thumbs the best thing to do is install windows 7 codecs from here.

Shark007.net - Windows 7 Codecs - WMP12 Codecs

make sure you uninstall any other codec packs you have installed.
this will work, icaros is also a part of sharks codecs, they work, 100%

This worked!! I never used it in my build, but hey, it works so no complaints here. Thanks for your help :)

Uninstall Media Player, download VLC Media Player, Install VLC Media Player

Can I install both? I like using Media Player, but I wouldn't mind opening my options.

glad that worked for you, i would recommend splash player pro ex to play movies, the only file type it cant handle is FLV, for them i use vlc.
splash player has a free lite package so you could try it although not all the features are available in the lite version.
