I actually wish more stores would do that. It's so sad when I go into a store with questions and wind up teaching the salespeople instead.

This is the one main reason why more and more consumers are just buying online instead of dealing with lackluster salespeople.

That and much better product selection, better prices, and better availability (fewer stockouts). I live in a major megopolis and it's like living in Hicksville.

I could name a few retail chains where once something is out it takes forever if at all to see restocked in the local stores! Now that wouldn't be Radio Shack however. That always seem to be one place that keeps up.

Now for shopping online compared to in store browsing you won't find the overhead online that brings prices up in a retail outlet. Most of the time when shopping online there will be at least a brief description about the product or item being sold while walking in and asking a part time clerk anything will typically see maybe one or two out of several stores that knows anything other then the manager or assistant manager.

You find a part time college student who just happens to be taking up IT if not another tech trade or simply be home user wise being self taught from home pc use. It certainly isn't all books in the OS field to begin with. Some "hands on" approach required please! :)

Greg,

were told our feedback wasn't wanted on Win8
Why would MS care what the MVP's think.

Well for Global MVP Summit they spend a fortune on wining, dining and five star hotels so I thought I should work a bit for my dinner.

I've spent a few days thinking about an answer to that.

Fact is I arrived at my first Summit 2011 expecting to meet with the WIndows 7 Product Team, having compiled a list of concerns which were then largely influenced by your leadership here. First up was weakness of Win7 backup imaging not being up to Win7 standards.

What I found was that Consumer MVP's were not assigned any Product group to interact with, so at our Product Group dinner we just met our MVP lead and discussed amongst ourselves. I got to hear a lot of outrage about how the MS Answers MVP's had just been locked out of their Control Panels with v.2.

In fact the only real content for Consumer MVP's were sessions for Answers, where the next year I got to meet their dynamic new VP (and former Oprah web czar) who had great plans and was also quite complimentary to me about 7F. This year however was a different picture as angry Answers MVP's demanded to know why none of the promised features (like ours) were delivered - apparently due to budget strains from taking on the Support load for so many new products.

I was also stunned back then in 2011 when we sat down to one seminar with a senior MS program manager who started by telling us not to even ask about Win8 preview bits (no one had) because they didn't need or want any feedback from us, would get everything needed from exabites of telemetry. This is the same guy who's now trying to force business into Win8 saying their BIOS' are at risk without Secure Boot, to which business has replied unanimously by deciding on Win7.

So I rest my hope that the market corrections will finally vindicate the best OS desktop experience ever, and repudiate an alleged successor OS with zero Desktop Experience.

never mind all that, where can i get one of homers layzee boy toilet recliners?

Greg, this is really a sad story. It is liable to blow up in their face though. With Windows 8 for the PC they went one step too far. The refusenicks will teach them a lesson.

Wally World and Fry's Electronics are the worst offenders in my neck of the woods.

Gosh goll... lllyy I think you read my mind! :roflmao: Wally Smally World takes the cake for that one!

They buy stuff in bulk quanties from overstocked wholesale autioners and then once something is stocked on the shelved and sold you never see it again! I've seen that with led flashlights as one example where 4 or 5 are seen hanging and once you go back to get another or two if you like one brand... too bad! You never see the exact same again ever! "Wat t'is no more?! wat's a matter for U wallymart!"

The trouble wth these types of retail chain stores is that they come in with their finger delving into what each other long time store sells to be diversified and then force the rest out while then never carrying or restocking what the other stores always seemed to have instock whenever you looked! And then you end up paying through the nose when traveling around a bit to eventually find what you used to see for a much higher price at smaller store due to that store's own overhead to stay open! Catch 22 Frightmare of frustrations!

When you make a similar comparison when looking at the latest MS offering you are scratching your head and have to go out somewhere else to find those things you always did see in Windows but are now gone for good? and of course many charge a price! Plus you now have whatever MS is promoting pushed into your face(Metro apps) at least until dumping some buttons on the new Start screen to be able to look at something else.

My public library has been using XP Professional on their staff computers since it first came out in 2001, and on their public Internet access computers since around 2003, even with different hardware upgrades over the years.

Last week they upgraded all the computers in the library... to Windows 7 Pro. No 8 for them!

The most of the libraries around here also offer at least one station depending on how large to get online and check or send email. The main library has several you sit at for an hour or one you can stand at for no more then 15min. since they limit the time. That's always a first come first serve situation anyways.

I haven't been there in some time now however to see which version is in use. Back when attending college courses I was just getting familiar with getting online and of course would be using IE 4 or 5 with 95 being the main OS at the time back in the mid to late 90s that is. By the time XP was out the old now long outdated dsl(98 drivers no less) I was already online with 98SE for some time before even looking at XP.

I was reluctant to consider ME when the media labeled it a flop! 2000 didn't look much like a home user desktop but business orientated version leaving 98SE to XP eventually as a dual boot at first once a second drive was in. Likewise before Vista finally arrived 98SE was too old and there were no more 98 drivers found for any new hardwares leaving that behind and then the XP/Vista dual boot arrives! That lasted until the 7 RC when it was obvious for both previous it was time to go with the exception of the XP Mode and XP VMs seen when trying out a few things.

Your library there obviously stayed with XP since Vista got a bad rep at the start plus on the usual bugget restraints until 7 was found to be worth the effort as well as being two versions newer. It was time to retire XP once and for all. And in less then 400 days gone for good!

Last week on a visit to my s stock broker he told me he and his wife gave their 30 something son a Toshiba laptop for Christmas that had 8 pre installed.
A week ago the son sheepishly returned it to them saying he had no use for Win 8.
I told him to call Toshiba and complain about 8 and maybe they would send or sell reasonable a copy of win7.

My public library has been using XP Professional on their staff computers since it first came out in 2001, and on their public Internet access computers since around 2003, even with different hardware upgrades over the years.

Last week they upgraded all the computers in the library... to Windows 7 Pro. No 8 for them!
Hi there

sometimes I do work for one of the Largest Oil companies in the world -- these companies are certainly not averse to using new technology (or hardware) when it suits them --However even in 2013 some of the servers are STILL running versions of Ms Server 2000 -- so it does the job that's required of it -- it's only used on local Intranets and basically it's just a huge file server and data repository-- why change it just for the sake of it.

So I don't really understand the emotions displayed in this thread -- Ms IS NOT forcing you to use Windows 8 -- it has quite simply stated that W7 will continue to at least 2020 (and like XP) there's no reason to suppose it will suddenly stop working after the end of life has been reached on Jan 1 2021.

For NEW hardware that's another issue -- but hasn't that always been the case -- Would Windows 98 be able to handle Blu Ray devices or even some of the faster wireless network protocols.

Whether you LIKE W8 is of course another issue -- so if you want to use NEW hardware you basically have 3 1/2 choices.

1) adapt W7 code to support new devices -- Good luck to you if you can do it.

2) Get Ms to modify the more infuriating bits of W8 -- but there is NO way they are going to re-write it so if you really can't get on with it you'll have to choose option 3

3) Rely on hobbyists and developers to support new hardware in various Linux distributions -- this is OK at the individual level but too risky for typical work places.

4) --Really it's only HALF a choice -- switch to "The Fruit Company" -- but they might not be able to support some of this new hardware either.

Cheers
jimbo

Before retiring from computer field service servicing laptops to Dec Alpha servers a customer would often have questions about their older pc/server keeping up.
To that I would reply that it will still do what it did the day it was new.

In that case you may want a look at the photo in post #54 on another thread when referring to something old and blue that if it still works will do precisely that what it did back in .. the early 1980s! http://www.sevenforums.com/news/282...s-last-best-hope-normality-6.html#post2342829

I can remember those old VT278H "boat achor" crts Dec had back then as well. Those did the job for what they were intended for. But in this time frame who would want a monochrome type display? when you can have multiple large screen lcds! To the better extent you move with the hardwares over time and usually end up needing to move into the newer OSs along the way.

I can remember those old VT278H "boat achor" crts Dec had back then as well.

By the time I got to Alpha servers the terminals were gone and replaced by PC's and we used laptops for service work. When I retired in 06 there were still a lot of Alpha systems running applications that would need retired with the systems and that meant large outlays of $$'s

When I left VM ware was catching on big time running on Compaq/HP servers.

But I remember well the Singer System Ten with core memory and Model 80 CRT boat anchors. they were good for eye strain and head aches.

I've just not convinced myself to spend another $100 for Win7 to replace the win I bought when I built this PC:sick:

What new hardware will Win7 not support? Haven't seen any yet.

Some consumers may look on their Win8 PC's Support webpage to find there are no 7 drivers, not knowing that Win7 would likely install them all anyway, and those still missing after install will be delivered by Windows Updates or found on the web.
