Between those two articles don't expect much! When they cut the desktop down to suit tablet and phone it was like cutting arms and legs off as far as what too many users seem to feel. Most simply do not want any mobile or mobile looking OS on their desktops.

The second article rather sums up the discouragement most feel about 8 on MS forcing touch&swipe onto everyone without any user option being thought out ahead of time showing a relatively naive approach to passing off the latest! The new Start button still suits tablet and touchscreen far more then ever will for the typical workstation's point and click ops.

8.1 as indicated there is the last ditch effort to save 8's face rather then admit they went astray from the working formula 7 brought in as far as the desktop platform is concerned. For tablet however it may still prove to be a winner in the long over the competition! That is yet to be seen however.

If you look back at the Legacy days of 98 they worked fast to come out with 98 Second Edition since the first was headed to Flopville in a hurry! Then XP was rushed out with countless errors to replace a failed ME version!

Does that mean they will rush a 9 out? Hopefully not but reflect back on what was brought in with 7 and the immediate success story when getting back ontrack as far as the working formulas for the desktop platform.

They certainly give that impression to the greater extent don't they?! What most may be missing however is the market and how that works as far as desktop sales plummeting and tablet, hand held devices soaring! 8.1 will be what 8 should have been as far as seeing a tablet OS look more like what you would normally expect to see for a desktop OS but more compact in form.

Following suit of the other guys hand helds where you typically see apps for download for your phone or IPxx whatevers you see the Metro apps for the tablet side of things rather then an OS already preloaded with a ton of features. If you catch a local tv report for example they'll tell you about their mobile app at their site for download in order to follow their news, weather, etc.

The simple mistake most are making is automatically 8 and 8.1 are the nextt desktop OS to follow 7 when in actuality MS moved off to the other platform with RT on their own brand of tablet. Software/IT developers still needed to be able to run 8, 8.1 on desktops however in order to design the new apps to be seen as well as those that already seen out for 8.

Even the OEMs realized the redical changes MS was making and came up with their own Start menus in order to push 8 out on their new desktops, laptops. You can still run them on desktops but should remember these are geared towards tablet

Thats a pretty good question. I think the answer is going to depend on the consumer.
Even though M$ has made some mistakes in the past, they always tried to meet the needs and desires of the consumer. That's how we got W7 which is a truly great desktop OS.
But now M$ has changed course and is at odds with consumers over W8. They're trying to dictate to us what we should like and what we're going to get, whether we like it or not. No options, just do what they say because they know best.

W8 is designed and optimized for touchscreens ala tablets/phones, with desktops considered only as an afterthought. With 8.1 they just doubled down, giving us more of the same, with very little meaningful change we were hoping for.

If consumers reward M$ for devaluing the desktop PC and converting everything to touchscreen swipe & smears by buying W8, then we can expect more of the same garbage and same attitude from M$.

On the other hand, if the consumer tells M$ to stick W8.1 in the same place they told them to stick W8, then maybe M$ will start acting a little more consumer friendly and less like a dictator.

The direction MS has taken with 8 and 8.1 won't make any difference with or without Ballmer! This is the end result of finally having a working desktop OS out(7) where they can now suddenly focus on grabbing up mobile market interests at the expense of the consumer.

Another thing being missed is why 8 when you see RT on Surface? Solaris runs only on SUN, Mac-aroni runs on Fruit baskets, and now RT runs only Surface revealing a prepriotary involvement leaving MS with the need for an over the counter OS you can stick on any other tablet that has support.

You can imagine in the MS board room shouting: "Hey what about all those other tablets? We can't allow RT to go on them since that's out baby! Besides we already have a good desktop OS out. People can wait!" And that is precisely what we will be doing is waiting and waiting to see if MS will slip up again or learn something from the W7 success story?!

Wasn't needed....turned out I like 7's start menu and all M$ Explorer needs is an up
button, available in Explorer++, so I have both the desktop and the PortableApps version.
So the former is used for quick peeks, the latter when serious work needs to be done.
Then in 2010 or thereabouts, IownAmoneyPit, made his adaptations of the classic theme.
With "Maple" back and Aero turned off [with a slight speed increase] I was content.

Now if forced to use W8, then the latest version of Classic Shell should come in handy.

button, available in Explorer++, so I have both the desktop and the PortableApps version.
So the former is used for quick peeks, the latter when serious work needs to be done.

I use Classic Shell on most of my installs. I have several Virtual Machines with the Windows 7 Default Start Menu for testing purposes. I agree about Windows 7 being zippier with the Classic Windows 2000 look. I use that on my main system.

I've played with Windows 8.1 Enterprise (64 bit) for a couple of hours.

I have set it to boot to the desktop and to use the "All Apps" view on the Start Screen.
It seems less annoying than Windows 8 seemed.

I get trapped in the Metro settings windows though (maybe because it's in a VM).

Also I notice that the main update window claims that I'm using "Automatic updates", but when I go to "Change update settings", that window says that I'm set to "Check for updates".

REPLACING STEVE BALLMER won't fix Microsoft, and given the firm's recent history and present situation, it's not inconceivable that the uncertainty and turmoil that result will only further demoralise and disrupt it, thereby hastening its downward trajectory.


...In his article for the New Yorker magazine on the back of Ballmer's departure announcement, Nicholas Thompson helpfully linked a brief video reminder that Ballmer has at times lacked the gravitas often possessed by the successful CEOs of major corporations, but he also linked a devastatingly insightful article by Kurt Eichenwald that appeared at Vanity Fair a year ago. There, he laid out the underlying reason for Microsoft's failure to execute successfully throughout the past decade. In short, the company has developed a vicious, dysfunctional corporate culture, based on ranking staff against each other and creating internal competition, rather than competition with other companies.


I don't expect that Microsoft will learn anything from that article. After all, that was published last August, and there's no sign that the company has noticed it. Nor do I anticipate that Microsoft will ever change. But if it doesn't change, it's certainly doomed, whoever succeeds Ballmer.

I have to stick with 32-bit because there are no 64 bit drivers/operating software for my legacy
MDP-130 capture card and I run it as 'all users', with compatibility set at XP SP2. However, if 'Resource Monitor" is to be believed, then the upper one gig not used by windows is being used by BIOS and the workstation's hardware, ie "Hardware Reserved" .

If they want to see PC sales jump instead of drop, all they need is to start reproducing W7 with a good SP2 for PCs, while W8 handles the mobile market. That would jump start sales.

Put a PC OS on PCs, and a mobile OS on mobile units. Duhhhh. Cmon M$ wake up.

Well Reaper I don't know about that mate I have 8 on my laptop with Stardock 8 and on my Sandy bridge with Classic shell and if you didn't see the start up screen and wonder why it was running so fast you would not know you were using 8.

Me I am just sick of the politics of it all it works as good as 7 for me and that is all I care about. I just wonder why some people have such a problem with it. As for the tablets well they are for the know it all teens and touch screens filthy things anyway who wants to look at finger smears all day

I am just saying it seems more suited to anything with a touch screen makes it a lot simpler to use then having to drag a mouse back and forth on the main screen

This may be true for browsing on an Ipad, but for real productive work like that which drives the world economy and similar to what I'm doing now here answering a dozen threads in an internet cafe in Berlin, it takes longer and interrupts the process to reach up and poke the screen.

The interruption is similar to having the Wall of Playskool buttons slam down on your work in place of the small unobtrusive Start menu popup that a billion people grew up with to use productively, and what was perfected in XP and Windows 7.
