Hello,

I'm having a vexing problem with an error message that pops up during file copying that basically says I dont have "permission to perform this action" See screen snip attached. This happens when I try to copy a bunch of data from my old XP machine to my new W7 build. Right now I just want to copy the files one way (XP to W7).

With many thanks to this forum, I've sucessfully got the two computers to see each other on a Workgroup connection named WORKGROUP. In most cases, I can copy data with no problem at all.

I've got about 50GB of family photos that I'm trying to copy. I managed to copy nearly all of them okay (I think). However, there are a few dozen files in a couple of folders that trigger this darn error message. In at least one of the folders that I have a problem with, some of the files copy fine. Go figure.

I've tried alot of things (thanks to this forum)...
- Using exact same username and password (blank) on both machines.
- Shared entire C drive on XP machine.
- Logged into both machines as Administrator and normal account.
- Disconnected my router and connected the computers with a switch.
- Turned Windows firewall OFF on both machines.
- Tinkered with folder share options to no end.
- Tried turning off "simple file sharing" on the XP machine.
- Changed the folder name that contained some of the problem files.
- Tried copying just one of the problem files by itself.
- Investigated the sharing settings of the problem folders and files.
- Check system date and time as well as BIOS date and time settings.

My set-up has both the XP and W7 machines connected to a Linksys firewall type router, which had a WAN connection to a DSL modem for internet acess. I have working internet on both machines and both machines can see each other.

I'm running out of ideas now. My big concern is loosing some of the pictures in my family photo collection, since I can't be sure what go copied or not.

Thanks

I assumed you've checked the NTFS permissions?

These are the permissions in the Security tab. Make sure group "Users" has modify permissions.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

That was dead on. I did some checking between the good and bad files (on the XP machine) and lo-and-behold, the permissions were not the same. First I tried adding "Users" but got the same result. Then I tried adding "Everyone" and... bingo it works :)

I can only get to those security settings with XP "Simple File Sharing" checked OFF(i.e. Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab > bottom of list).

Now I want to know how to set the permissions for the rest of my files on the XP machine. The folder settings would have me believe that "Everyone" and "Users" were given full control. But that didn't happen. There's an Advance Settings box which seems to have some interesting options. Unfortunately I'm a bit confused about it right now.

Folder Settings for "Users"...

Folder Settings for "Everyone"...

The Advanced settings dialog...

Any tips on how I might straighten out my file permissions?

File permissions are what you require them to be, there are no tips about them. What errors have you got now?

I think I've got it sorted out now. It seems I need to reset the permisions for all "child" objects in the folder using the Advanced Security Setting dialog. The check boxes at the bottom are a bit confusing for me, but I think I need the bottom one checked ON that says...

"Replace permissions entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects"

I'm not sure about the other checkbox that says ...

"Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here"

I've been leaving this one ON as well.

The only other problem I had was getting access to the W7 machine shared folders from the XP machine. At first I could see the W7 machine from the XP machine but I couldn't open it up (access denied). Then I remembered somewhere is a thread off this forum that you need to have an actual password for the user account. I've been using blank passwords so far. Once I set up passwords, identical for both machines, it worked.

It would be nice to make with work without the passwords if that was possible.
