Only time I've had problems with heavy RAM usage is when I had Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service enabled. I read that it's quite buggy when it comes to .avi files and it can sometimes hang and cause memory leaks. Disabling that fixed it.

I have Windows 7 on my 1GB of RAM netbook and that's never maxed out on RAM either.

I have not found any applications that worked in xp or vista (32 or 64bit) that I could not get working in windows 7

This is perhaps OT to the thread but if you've ever used a MINIDISC recorder you'll know that these don't work in any OS'es after XP - not even VISTA.

There are many apps that don't work with later OS'es than XP for all sorts of reasons --Manufacturer out of business etc etc.

I still like my MD recorder -- ATRAC beats the S--T out of any MP3 compression -- but MD is a legacy device and has no support after XP.

(I use a Virtual Machine for ripping music to a MD device -- that still works fine).

I managed to get things written for XP but not Vista running on the 32bit 7. 7 features the new application compatibility troubleshooter making that possible.

With one IE window open as well as the Asus ACPI center presently some 33% out of the 4gb is used. That's what seen in application window of the task manager not over in the processes tab for thing like UltraMon and other startup items.

As far as games those won't chew up as much memory as thought. The caching and other processes add to the total of the ram used. Networking will play a large role there at times however along with programs like Cad or some other memory chompers.

I'm lost of this too. My machine used xp before i reformated to windows 7. I only have 2 gigs of RAM and i have never seen it go past half usage.

it looks to me like avast is busy maybe that will explain some of it. try looking for memory leaks in your system otherwise.

Remember when you see the "cached memory" that's the total of memory blocks set aside for temporary storage of data for ready access by the cpu, drives, etc. there. Plus the 64bit Windows sees more data loaded into ram over the 32bit accounting for the larger amount of ram being seen as used.

Well i also wonder what programs thet are running to quantify their numbers. Currently I have 2 SF windows open, My TV running, GTAIV Social club, windows live messenger, Task manger.and IMing at the moment and have a 22% ram usage. Oh plus Steam and ebay toolbar and any DVD, alos Avast. Also have way to many process at the minute 79 cause I haven't taken the time to lean out 7 yet. Cpu usage is at 2% Guess I'm missing something here cause as far as I can tell 7 uses Ram extremly effeciant. IMO. Fabe

Another day, another article with random opinions on 7. Average of 3.3GB? That implies x86. My two main machines are an ultraportable in my specs and a gaming pc - the laptop has 6GB DDR3 1066MHz, the gaming system 8GB DDR3 1333MHz - I have never had memory issues. Only issue I have is Sony was too cheap to front another 2GB considering I paid thousands for the laptop. Building my own laptop next anyway.

i've yet to have any ram problems either. i wonder if this comes from the idea that people say well it's using more than my old xp did so it must be bad. you should be glad your system is using more ram(assuming it's using it correctly and it's not a memory leak) 7 has made vast improvements in memory managment and that extra ram being used is making your system faster and more responsive instead of sitting there ideally. i think by default 7 will on average use around 35% on a light load and increase as needed. which is good. thats the point of having all that ram if ir's not being touched.

I think that you meant propagation, rather than dissipation, but whichever the case may be, it would have to fall under a libel action, which is normally defaming a person (by law, a corp. is a person), and usually regards written statements damaging a person"s reputation, not a product of theirs.

Even if Microsoft could win such a case, it probably would do them more damage than XPnet would do. If such actions became SOP, it would probably be perceived as heavy handed, abusive use of the law, and cost them both in legal costs, which the loser wouldn't be able to repay, and loss of income from sales.

EDIT: Libel also requires proving malicious intent, and would also requires proving actual loss caused by the libel.

To an extent...yes. Libel is not something easy to prove, and a lot of lawyers are reluctant to take such a case. If one does, it would probably require that the person being sued has deep pockets to dip into, but if those pockets are deep, that also means that they could drag out a case for many years, and even after a court ruled against them, it would take many more years before any money traded hands. Chances are that it would end up being settled out of court, and the lawyers would end up getting the lion's share of the settlement.
