Apologies for the banality, but I am unable to spot what motherboard is installed on my brand-new HP pavilion G6-1365SL laptop. I need it in order to check if the manifacturer provides drivers for XP pro.

Can anybody explain me where to look for the motherboard? I looked under Control Panel - System and Security - System - Device Manager. I found all other relevant devices there (video card, hard disk etc.), but I can't identify the name of the motherboard.

All help appreciated! :)

Aside from the chipset, there's little you'd need to know about the motherboard for compatibility. It's the rest of the components that matter. You may run into difficulties, though, if the laptop is brand new. You have to remember that XP is well over a decade old....so support is next to nonexistent.

Are you having an issue that makes you think rolling back to XP is the solution?

@ Deaconfrost

It is not a matter of compatibility; I need to identify the motherboard's producer to visit its site and see if they have the drivers for XP.

As to the reason for downgrade... lots of my programs won't run on Win 7 64 bit. I tried all possible means and they still don't work.

I can hardly believe Microsoft released an OS utterly adverse to software released just a few years ago. Even programs created under Vista don't run or even install on my laptop. What a s:zip: ..............

What are some of the examples? Aside from older, 16 bit programs from many years ago, I haven't come across anything that doesn't run. Besides, if it's a relatively now laptop, you can always virtualize XP and not have to worry about tracking down old drivers.

Don't fall into the trap of just bashing Microsoft and Windows 7 rather than trying the usual quick solutions.

Also have an Asus ha1002xp netbook with Win 7 Ultimate installed.
From what I see here, HP doesnt provide win XP drivers. Alot of newer machines dont offer full backward compatibility that far back on drivers, since XP is not longer sold.

@ Deaconfrost:

Viva Pinata is a good example of a program that installs perfectly on XP pro and won't install on my new Win 7 Home Premium 64bit laptop. I tried all possible compatibility modes (the game was made for XP SP2 and VISTA), and then I followed all suggestions offered in the following discussion:

Unable to install Viva Pinata error: OX80040702. Impossible to - Microsoft Answers

Yet the program still refuses to install. Do you have any idea on what could be done that I havn't already attempted?

Microsoft believes it's compatible with both 32 and 64 bit Win7:

Windows 7 Compatibility for Microsoft Viva Pinata: Microsoft. Drivers, Updates, Downloads

Some problems don't occur if you run the game's installer with admin privileges, but I suppose that you've already tried that.

I'm seeing a lot of people complaining that they can't save a game (but fixes exist). I can only find the one thread you listed with an installation error. So, it seems like most people can get it to install fine. I saw a few suggestions to run the System File Checker prior to installing.
