Mouse/Computer Freeze Every Hour & Action Center Msgs

All of a sudden my Windows 7 Home Premium computer has been acting up with a series of symptoms I could not all fit in the subject line.

  1. The first thing is that clicking the mouse (Logitech M510) would not work or open an icon or menu. Then the pointer typically turns into something like a hand, or a spinning blue circle that never ends.
  2. It generally happens when the browser is open, and I am working in it, but has happened in MS Word. The document becomes unresponsive to commands, the Word application becomes dim and grayed out (still clear), and at the top, it says something about Word "not responding".
  3. I have a red X on the Microsoft Action Center. Yesterday , three messages were there, one about insufficient backup disk space, and two about a problem with the video driver. This morning, there are six messages:
    - Sypware and unwanted software protection (Important).
    - Virus protection (Important).
    - Solve a problem with AMD -Display Adapter - ATI Radeon Graphics.
    - Solve a problem with AMD/ATI video driver.
    - Install your vide card driver.
    - Check backup disk space.
I installed the most recent driver and software for the R5770 card, but no change in the messages.
  4. The freezing happens after the computer has been on for at least 20 minutes or perhaps quite a bit longer (I have not measured).
  5. Applications generally open when the problem happens are Microsoft Outlook 2010 and Internet Explorer 10.0.9200.16635.
Hardware & Software:

Thank you.

Phil

What is your Anti-virus program? Have you scanned with it since these messages appeared?

I use Norton Internet Security as provided free from Comcast. The version is 20.4.0.40. I have not scanned it since the messages appeared, but am now. So far, on full scan, two security threats detected. I was surprised that updates were available...I thought it did this automatically.

I am at wits end. Clean Boot = no change. I desperately need this computer (looking for a job) and really don't have time for this. But, may have to wipe out everything and reinstall Windows, since I cannot find any other solutions, and hope a day going through that process fixes it. Appears to freeze every hour or so.

What are the threats that Norton found?

Adware. I couldn't get any more detail, as the computer froze right when I was looking at it in Norton.

I see now that the problem (mouse freeze, then computer freeze) happens exactly every hour.

Well, I believe I fixed the hourly freeze problem. It appears that the Crucial M4 SSD I have has firmware version 0002, which is amongst those that are known to freeze ever running hour, once they reach 5,184 hours of use. I upgraded the firmware and no more freezing, at least so far.

Now I have the Action Center with video driver messages. I don't think this is a malware problem. The video works fine. Maybe I will uninstall the driver and reinstall and see what happens. Hope that does not leave me with a blank screen after uninstall!
