Mouse disconnecting in strange ways

I have a logiteh G500s mouse, and recently it has been behaving strangely. Almost exclusively while playing games, mostly Planetside 2 (mainly because that's all I play at the moment), the mouse will lose power/disconnect. The lights go off, the game stutters, and I hear the windows device disconnected sound. Usually by about 10 seconds it will reconnect, although the DPI settings get all messed up. Occasionally however it will not properly reconnect - the lights will turn on briefly, then off, over and over as if it is getting power for 1 second at a time, then none for another second. The only way to fix this is to restart the computer (once I fixed this by changing the USB port for the mouse).

I have wiggled the cable at both ends of the mouse and cannot recreate it, so I don't think it's the cable. The way it loses power though suggests it's something hardware related. The fact it occasionally does the on-off thing despite unplugging the mouse and plugging it in to anther port (it fixed it once, no other times), suggests maybe its not the mouse, but my computer? But then restarting the logitech drivers can have an effect on the DPI settings after its reconnected, so maybe software plays a role?

I've googled all sorts and can't find a solution, any suggestions? Should I just try to return the mouse and see if that fixes it?
