Solved Mouse problem pointer on screen has a mind of it's own and hangs top

I can only trace this problem to within Win7 where the mouse pointer hangs at the
top edge of the screen.

I tried many things: changed a vid card and used a backup HD.

It occurred to me that this might be an overheating problem so I changed a fan. My fan setup
is different than most to get the noise down. A more heavy duty cpu fan did not relieve
the problem.

Other things to try is I think I have a backup CPU. The problem seems sporadic
where everything is fine for period, then the pointer goes to top edge and stays there.

The driver is NVidia for video but I think problem is elsewhere. I did reinstall
the NVidia driver as well.

Last question is: is there an executable program to refresh the mouse driver?

I thought I had it by uninstalling a duplicate of VLC but the problem
originates from the OS at desktop.


The motherboard is an older Biostar MCP6PB M2+

Just an update on this. I have replaced all the core components of memory, cpu of the same Athlon iI type, power supply, video etc..

Two mice on the system, one wired, one not have worked for six years or so on this setup. I don't believe a conflict is at fault.

Lastly, I began building a new install from the Setup disk thinking a virus might exist. The cursor pointer problem even happened there before any driver disks from the original motherboard were used. I didn't even get through that setup.

Conclusion: It has to be on the motherboard itself as all other components have been changed out.
I would like to know if anyone has seen this problem where the mouse pointer loses all direction and gravitates to the top edge of screen and only lateral movement exists at all.

Ready to mark this solved but I'm going to give it a few days to make sure.

As the above posts say I turned everything upside down when this problem occurred. It seemed insoluble. I then took down the rig completely and set up my other workstation as an only.

The problem was still there.

Only two pieces remained to be changed out.

Realizing that I did not have the keyboard from working setup on any of these failed
hardware fixes, I then switched out the keyboard. The keyboard was the problem to this point of discussion.

Having a mouse dance on the screen, I had no clue to look for it at the keyboard. I did not inspect the underside of the motherboard for solder breaks and hopefully will not have to.

I'll mark this solved with much relief after a few days of use. Finding this problem from a second- hand one dollar keyboard I had been using for years because of the feel it has came as a shock.
At least previously I could diagnose things fairly well in hardware.

Back to looking for solutions.
This round through I'm changing USB ports for the wireless mouse.
Also will direct connect rather that run on an extension USB cable adapter.

Is there interference possible to produce such a problem? It has never
happened before though over the life of the motherboard.

Can someone give a screen shot of what the Human Interface and Mouse config
looks like? My suspicion is that there is some duplication of entries even though
I only use one edition of Win7 for everything.

Also I've found I had to go to backup HD after attempting to uninstall a duplicate
entry in Device Manager. This crippled the machine directly where I uninstalled
one. Perhaps instead of disabling. Is there a recovery solution for hitting one of these uninstalls in device manager to aleviate a problem? It appears there is no discovery on reboot to get one back.

Going back and finding things overlooked, I replugged the USB extension cable to a different rear panel socket. This seems to have given some stability but I'm still watching for errors.

In this build rear panel is all that is availble. On the motherboards there is a USB header used fro front panel assemblies and easy access. If I have to get a cable adapter for that, it might be another workaround.

What I overlooked was to trace the problem from the device and work backward from it. But with all the changing around I went through , using the same bad port/socket could have happened.
As of now, I am back with mouse control.

A change in USB ports (from a separate group) has solved the dancing mouse pointer problem. Advice on this error is start from the device and work backward. Hopefully this will aid others.
