Mouse single click too sensitive...

Has anyone else had the problem of single clicking an object to focus on it but having it execute instead?

Example: I select a music (MP3) to Edit - rather than focus on the MP3 Explorer launchs the file and begins to play.


Possible (though illogical solution) - the speed of the mouse being set to higher movement seems to stop the behavior. ie: slower movement rates of the mouse present the problem.

Just wanted to know if anyone else has seen this behavior.

Hello Rkseagle,

When using single-click, you would just want to let the mouse pointer hover over the file to select it instead of clicking on it. If you are using a touchpad instead of a mouse, then you may need to adjust the tap sensitivity to help prevent tapping when you are just moving.

Thanks for the response Shawn.

The problem is that no matter the 'hover' time - the file opens with a click rather than a double click.

I looked into increasing the hover time, no help.
I've set file and folder options to look for double clicks, no help.

There seems to be a sensitivity in there somewhere that takes away my control of the mouse selection process and only by increasing the mouse movement have I been able to find any relief at all.

Probably gonna chuck this Dell mouse for something a little fancier to see if that helps.

Do you have a setting like this one in the Mouse setting in the Control Panel that you may be able to adjust for this?

Yes, and using it tones down the problem a little bit.

Oddly, increasing the speed seems to work best. The slower settings make the problem almost unbearable as I cannot even select any file in Explorer without it taking off.

Interesting. You would think that it would be the opposite of that.

No, actually, it makes perfect sense. if you set it for slower the time interval between clicks is allowed to be longer, thereby making your problem worse. Obviously your mouse is sending click indications even when it is not clicking. Therefore, setting it to a faster setting lowers the time interval allowed between detected double clicks, thereby making your problem more manageable.

However, the larger problem seems to be your mouse itself - I'd check to see if you need to replace it (if it is a corded mouse) or else check for updated drivers / hardware problems if it is a cordless mouse. battery check might be a good idea as well.

FWIW, it would have helped to know these things ahead of time as well....

I've only had one other mouse go bad on me and this took some time to figure out.

I had come to the same conclusion and as time and money permits I'll likely move up to a better mouse...

What mouse do you have, and what is it's age?

I'd find a nice old used PS2 mouse to replace it with in the interim as this will drive you more and more crazy.

Trust me, I have had this happen to me - that is how I know that this was happening - and it took me almost a week before I finally suspected the mouse.

I have the Dell 2 button USB that came with the computer. It is pretty spartan by what I see on some of them these days but has always been able to get the job done.

Interesting you should mention an old PS2 as I also thought the old HP PS2 would work just fine for awhile.

Been there, Done That...

I do have the notion that this mouse may also be having a problem with the clear type although it is all but impossible to say that with conviction because of the other problems it has been having. Got a new mouse on order so this problem will either go away or it may be confirmed as a true bug in the system... Doubt that because Windows 7 has been running very well...

I have the same problem... get a "double click" response when i single click.. checked folder setting to verify double click to open was set correctly, d'loaded latest intellimouse software from microsoft, uninstal old software, re-install new software, reboot, no help. Reboot into 2 different XP configurations, on same system, mouse works without a problem. Obviosly a mouse driver problem, lol a microsoft mouse that doesn't work with a microsoft OS...<sigh> what to do, what to do....

I found a clever solution for this... there is an option to "Use checkboxes to select items"... What this does is when you point at something it doesn't automatically select it... there is a floating checkbox you can check to make the selection stop following your mouse... for multiple selections just check the appropriate boxes.


EDIT: I just double checked in control panel -> folder options -> view the "use checkboxes to select items" option is there as well.


I'm not usually one for gimmicks... but this one I like.

I tried that. using the check boxes in folder options. I thought my problem was fixed, as the mouse worked "normally". Unfortunately, the mouse is back to its old tricks, double clicks when I single click. Iset the double click speed one step away from maximum to execute, and regardless of how slowly i single click, it still double clicks. Again, I have multiple OS configurations on the is computer, and this only happens in Windows 7

Same problem. I thought it was the mouse so I replaced it. That seemed to do the trick for about a month and now its happening again. Highly annoying !!! I do not think this is a mouse issue however it may possibly be an issue with a bad USB port or dodgy power.

Changes to the mouse click speed do not work.

Okay, I know this thread is a little old, but I have the same problem.
The biggest difference is that I have to two mice, and I've tried both, with the same problem.
It seems to be software related. Sometimes it will go away after a big Windows 7 update, sometimes it will get worse after a Windows 7 update, sometimes it will appear or disappear for no reason.
The sensitivity seems to vary, from being totally unresponsive, to suddenly being extremely responsive and logging each click as a double or sometimes triple click.
Did anyone ever find a real solution to this?

It could be in mouse itself. I've tried 2 different mouse and the new one works fine. I suggest you buy regular priced mouse or higher than the cheap one.
