USB Mouse Misbehavior - Driver Related?

Hello,

I have a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H based system running Win 7 SP1. It seems that it has always had issues with some anomalous mouse behavior with several different Microsoft optical wheel mice. The symptoms are as follows:

1. Screen scroll jump as if the wheel was turned by wasn't.

2. Single (left) clicks often interpreted as double clicks.

3. Moving the mouse too quickly can cause open window focus to change to a different window.

Symptoms 1 & 2 have been there for a long time. However, symptom 2 got noticeably worse and symptom 3 showed up after applying some legacy system updates.

In looking at the actual mouse drivers it appears that it was originally using the Win 7 supplied driver 6.1.7600.16385. As a last ditch effort I installed the MS Mouse & Keyboard center ver 2.3. This did update the mouse driver but caused no improvement in symptoms.

So this appears to be software/driver related. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this issue?

Any thoughts? I am thinking that USB messages are getting lost/delayed. Any way to test / monitor the performance of a USB port?

try connecting another brand of usb mouse like a logitech wired usb mouse to see if the problem occurs there as well

are the Microsoft optical wheel mice you tried out wireless or wired?

edit - there are at least 3 versions (or revisions or revs.) of the ga-z97x-ud5h board - rev. 1.0, rev. 1.1 & rev. 1.2
what revision of the board you have?

edit2 - and also, connect the usb mouse to only one of the usb 2.0 (black) ports and not to any of the usb 3.x (blue) ports

Great minds think alike! I have 3 microsoft optical wheel mice of various vintages and they (or my PC) all seem to have issues of one form or another. One issue is the random scroll jump (either direction). The other is random double click for single click operation. I am beginning to think that MS doesn't know how to design reliable hardware

I just dug through my "mouse nest" and did find a Logitech optical wheel mouse to try. Will report back

They are all 100% wired. That rules that out.

Rev 1.2 (latest and last version)

I thought that this may be an issue as the MB diagram is vague as to which chip (X97 or SuperIO) controls the mouse USB ports. I think that I verified by transfer speed test that the KB and mouse USB ports come from the Z97 chip.

I also tried plugging the mouse into one of the USB 3.0 ports on the back and it didn't help.

Well, after further experimentation I have come to the conclusion that ALL 3 MS Optical Wheel mice have likely design issues. The main issue is that the firmware in the actual mouse doesn't properly de-bounce the ANY of the button switches based on worst case specified bounce times. As the mice and switches age the bounce time gets worse causing this issue.

The switches themselves appear to be quality tact switches made by Panasonic (Matsushita) and they still provide a quality low resistance connection when closed.

Meanwhile, the scroll jump issue is likely related to hokey "tilt" design of the scroll wheel that requires the weak scroll wheel switch push the right axle of the wheel back into the proper position.

Bottom line is that the Logitech wheel mouse doesn't exhibit the scroll jump or button double click issues but it has occasional troubles reading the wood grain pattern on my desk.
