moved threads

Question: when a thread is moved how long does it stay before it's completely gone? How long does the moved thread stay? Just wondering.

A moved thread is just like any other thread. As soon as a moderator moves it, it goes to the new location.

I got that part....but why is it still listed where it was posted in the first place under the title moved. I was just wondering how long it stayed there under the renamed moved title. I agree with post being moved as they should be.

A moderator could probably give more of a definitive answer, but it seems to stay about a day. I think it uses the same system that deletes PM's from your profile. It is called a soft delete, per the PM's that are deleted in the profile.

When a thread is moved, the Staff member who moves it can choose whether or not to leave a redirect, i.e. a link to the relocated thread from its original location.

The options are No Redirect, Permanent Redirect (these are self-explanatory) or an Expiring Redirect. This is the default, and the default period is 1 hour. This means that when a thread is moved, a redirect is left in the original location pointing to the new location, just as it would be with a Permanent Redirect. However, once that period of time has elapsed, the redirect notice is automatically removed.

For example, I have moved this thread to the Chillout Room with the default settings, so in about an hour the redirect notice in General Discussion will disappear. The thread, however, will not, and will still be found in its new location in the Chillout Room.

I think it would be useful to have at least a temp redirect showing. Many a time Ive seen a post moved and not been able to find it quickly.

I agree, and I am just as guilty as the rest of the Staff members for moving posts. The question is, do you think that 1 hour is suffcient? Would you say that something like 3 hours is more like it? The problem with extending the time is that it can, on some occasions, leave a sub-forum full of redirects. Personally, I think that an hour is sufficient.

Any more than 1 hour and the general chat section is awash with moved thread redirects and that looks awful.

I think 24 hours would be better. Some of us only visit once or twice a day. JMHO

If it's a thread that you have already posted in then it is still easily findable even without a redirect via the "threads I've posted in" option in your quick links menu.
