Moving data from old XP hdd onto New win7 pc

HI.
I have bought a new win7 pc and put my old XP pc out to grass, I have removed the old Xp Hdd and mounted it into a usb Caddy. What I want to do is either use this as a duel boot win7/xp or transfer all my xp data over onto my new pc. Some advice please.

Can Windows7 read the HDD - if yes, just copy the data. If you want to dual boot with XP, you may need a new XP license for the new PC - unless you have an XP retail license. There are tutorials on this forum how to dual boot Win7/XP.

If you want to dual boot you may run into licensing troubles (also what WHS said) but if you don't its just as simple as changing which HD boots via the BIOS menu before an operating system boots.

You can (on some systems), but unless it is a USB3, it will be painfully slow. Best is an eSata attachment.

To boot XP on the new hardware you'd need to plug it into an available IDE or SATA port (whichever it is) and then run an XP Repair Install.

Otherwise to access just it's data see if it is seen in caddy, if not plug it in internally, copy the data off or move the data to another partition your shrink to create in Disk Mgmt. This will allow you to delete XP partition and have only the data on the HD.
