While waiting for my new computer to arrive, I'm researching.

My 5 year old Dell XPS died last Thursday. File backup ran last Wednesday to my 1TB external HD. Yesterday, ordered HPE_180t running Windows 7.

Will 7 recognize my files on the external for a smooth and easy transfer?

Welcome burntpixel!

If all goes as designed, it should be very smooth. Of course, anything can happen, but there are not any known bugs that would give you problems here.

Thank ya Mr. King
Let us hope Microsoft made a product that is compatible with an older version.
I spoke with a friend of mine who works for Microsoft and he was telling me it should be a straight forward easy process. Load up the external go to control panel, load the files from the hard drive. He said it will be just my files, I will have to load my software to the new machine.

Waiting on new pc, I'll keep ya posted how it goes for future searches.

Thanks again,

I would just copy the files to the disk with a simple copy and then copy them into the Win7 folders. That works in any case. The windows backup can be iffy.
