ms verses third party

would people recomend using third party defragmenters etc or ms. I have used third party defrag in the form of iobits smart defrag which a found out about after using the advanced system care package from the same company. These all advertise themselves as being better alternatives but is this true. Should i stick to microsoft, thanks for any replies

That is the question that will bring 100 replies and disagreement. The built in is good enough. No grapichs to entertain you as it works, but its fine. It does the job that is expected. May be a bit slower than some others, but you should not defrag that often for it to make a difference.

There is nothing wrong with the built in MS offering, however as Rich mentioned, many people use 3RD party tools and have their own preferences.

The 'better' part is subjective.

Some 3rd party tools offer more 'advanced optimisation' defrag settings, but with the speed of 7200RPM mechanical HDD drives, the performance difference isn't always noticeable.

It is a matter of opinion which is better.
Some prefer to use the inbuilt MS defragger.
Others prefer to pay for third party services with all the so called bells & whistles.

For 7, I found the built in defrag does really well. It takes a while, but it does its job. Fancy graphics would keep me entertained, but oh well.

For XP, I've found that Auslogics Disk Defrag works better than the built in defrag, and the graphics are funner to watch. But I still wouldn't use it over the 7 built-in defrag.

Concerning the speed of the built in defrager....It doesn't need to be fast.
It is designed to be ignored and ran in the background. Designed so you don't have to think about it.

Logicearth says, it doesn't need to be fast. Think of it this way. Would you rather a doctor take one look at you a prescribe something, or give you a though examination, then do what she/he thinks is best based on your specific needs?

The Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers are state of the art.

Following the CCleaner monthly they keep HD's perfectly clean and ordered.

you say it take a long time, i used it and it goes through passes, what are these? it got to pass 11 and seemed to get nowhere so i stopped and used 3rd party

For the KISS, keep it simple stupid, approach, I recommend using the Win 7 defragmenter.

I've used several others, but for the person who simply wants to use their computer and forget about all the neat software which they can use to clutter their desktop, then use the Win 7 defragmenter.

Note: My desktop is cluttered.

Yes, those passes are what I based my analogy on in my other post. Instead of going through one or two times, and assuming all is well, 7's defrag goes over the hard disk multiple times, and even moves non-fragmented files around in such a way the Windows will boot faster and programs will run faster. Let it run. You can do your normal activities while it runs, like web browsing or using MS Office. Some hard drive intensive stuff might run slow, like video editing.
