Solved MSE Update Last Night - Problems Today

Last night when running Windows Update, there was an update for MSE. Not a definition update, but an update to MSE itself. Today, I'm using 900 MB more RAM than normal and I'm having unusual network behavior (too much activity).

I'm curious. Did anyone else get the update? Are you having a similar issue?

I ask because I got click-jacked to an adult site the other day, and I'm afraid that my computer might have picked something up. I'm not sure that the MSE update was legit. I'm scanning with Malware Bytes right now...

Hmmm...

I got no such update. I think you may have been spoofed. I would run some scans using Malware or something like that. I suspect your MSE may have been compromised.

What a crappy Internet it is out there...

It is a legit update, my MSE was updated and no such problems, if it came from windows updates it will be legit. The new version number for MSE AntiMalware Client Version is 4.5.216.0.

Hi,
You weren't still surfing while the updates was downloading and installing were you ?
Most larger updates will shut off protection while they load and a following boot,
I was messing with mabm a bit and used system restore so I doubt I'm a good one to determine how large the scheduled updates was last night because I had to reload a 8.mg update,

What made me ask is I got the KB2949787 definition 4.5.216.0 3/25/14 and this thread started about a hour ago.

I wondered if I was missing something.

I was browsing at an electronics web page and clicked a link (which was not an advert, and was totally in context with the page) and wound up at an adult site. I got out of there right away, closed my browser and wiped the cache and cookies, deleted temporary internet files, etc.

I can't explain the high memory usage, but MBAM and Spyware Search and Destroy didn't find anything. MSE looks like it's OK, according to others in this thread, so I'll try that next.

A porn ad in webpage can also mean adware amok. I'd also run a full scan with SUPERAntiSpyware - Downloads. As with MBAM decline the trial version, turn off at Startup in msconfig.

There are other precautions in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

Are there repeat errors from MSE in Event Viewer>Custom>Admin View? If so google the text to find the fix. There is one I have to fix regularly by deleting the oobe file which causes minor irritations. Session "Microsoft Security Essentials OOBE" stopped message - Microsoft Community A reinstall can often solve other problems. If in doubt stop running MSE for awhile to see if this resolves any performance issues.

Problems with MSE are rare, however.

I ran Super antispyware and it found nothing, either. I think after four scans I can safely conclude that there is no problem. I still can't explain the surge in memory use, but that seems to have settled down as well.

I'll chalk this one up to confusion on my part.

Yeah, that's all I run, too. The fewer add-ons the better for me.
