Solved Multiple BSODs a day before and after replacing hard drive

Hello. For a couple months now my computer has been crashing multiple times a day, every day.

I ran a test through Dell PC Diagnostics on the Dell website and it told me there was a critical issue with my hard drive, so last week, I replaced it with a hard drive they recommended for my laptop. I reinstalled Windows 7 onto the hard drive because it didn't come with an OS, and as I was downloading and installing the drivers for my computer from the Dell site, my computer crashed with a BSOD. There was nothing else on my hard drive yet, so I have a feeling the issue is with one of the drivers from the Dell site? I don't really know. And since then, blue screen crashes have been a regular, every day thing, just as it was before replacing the hard drive, and now I'm wondering if my hard drive issue was unrelated to the crashing.

I'm not sure if this information would be any help but: I've ran other Dell PC Diagnostic tests on my other hardware and it's been saying everything is okay. For the test on software, they have a Blue Screen Analyzer, which I've ran and received two results: "Blue Screen Critical Error" and "Blue Screen Error". Then when I try to run the Blue Screen Troubleshooter, Dell System Detect (a program that the Dell site uses to connect to my computer, I supose) crashes and the troubleshooting never happens.

I don't have any of the error codes from the blue screens to give you because they seem to be different every time, and I never manage to write them down before the screen turns black. The last one I had, I remember reading that the issue was with fltmgr.sys. I don't think I've ever seen that issue on the blue screens I've had before.

Any help I can get with this would be amazing, because I'm living in constant fear of a BSOD. I'm constantly copying this text and pasting it into Notepad in worry that my computer is going to crash any second now, and I'll lose everything I've just typed.

Thanks so much for reading this long post.

Free up the startup. Windows does not need any other program to auto start with it, but the auto start programs often conflicts and causes various problems including BSODs.

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
  3. Select the “Startup” tab.
  4. Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
  5. Apply > OK
  6. Accept then restart.
How many days ago you replaced the HDD?

The RAM/DIMMs need to tested, I think.

Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight. Stop testing if it shows at least a single error.

First run it with all the existing/installed RAM modules. If it comes with no error, all is good.

But if it starts showing errors, Stop testing. Errors/red lines means one or more RAM is faulty. But the fault may occur due to a faulty DIMM slot, too, which is a motherboard component. Using memtest86+, you can discriminate between a faulty RAM and a faulty motherboard.

How? Say you have two RAM sticks and two DIMM slots. You obtained errors at the test with all RAM sticks installed. Now, remove all the sticks but one. Test it in all the available slots, one by one. Continue the same procedure for all the available sticks.
How to make the inference that is it a RAM issue or it is a motherboard issue? Suppose you have got the result like that:
test|Slot1|Slot2
RAM1| Error | Error
RAM2|Good|Good
It is a RAM, a bad RAM.

But if you have got a result like that:
test|Slot1|Slot2
RAM1| Error |Good
RAM2| Error |Good
It is a motherboard issue. The particular slot is bad.

You have 6 GBs of RAM. Let us know the breakup? Is it came with 6 GBs installed or you enhanced it?

Thanks for the reply.

I freed up the startup, and I'm going to run the tests for the RAM modules overnight and post the results.

I replaced the hard drive 10 days ago.

My laptop came with 6GB of RAM.

So, I ran Memtest several times and got an error with RAM 1 in slot 1. RAM 2 didn't have an error in slot 1 or 2, so I'm guessing the problem is with RAM 1 which is my 2GB stick. I don't have any way of testing my RAM sticks in another computer.

However, I switched which slots the sticks originally came in, and I haven't had a blue screen in almost two days. This could just be a fluke? Should I wait to see if I my computer crashes again before replacing my 2GB RAM stick?

Never mind, my computer just crashed.

Where do I go from here? Replace my RAM?

Yes, replace the faulty RAM with a matching one of the existing one, or change the both with a kit compatible with your computer.
