I am still having problems installing updates. Noel had been helping me but he got bogged down at work. Most of the minor updates will install with no issues. The major ones will appear to install but will fail and give an error code - usually Code 80073712 - the update failed to install. This has been happening for over a year now. It seemed to start about the time when the Windows 10 upgrade was forced on my machine and I uninstalled it according to instructions on MS website. I have tried several things that Noel suggested but still no complete success.

When you uninstalled Windows 10, did you do a fresh install of Windows 7 or just do the reverse process from 10?.

It wasn't a full Win10 upgrade. It was the 'push' that Microsoft did at the first of the year. Even though I had selected not to get the Win10 upgrade, the install files had gotten installed anyway. I uninstalled the update which uninstalled the update files. Ever since I have had issues with some of the major update files. This is a work issued laptop that would be a major hassle to reimage and reset all the permissions.

It looks like W10 part install & uninstall has caused your problems. The only really complete fix is probably a reformat & a clean install of W7.

I can appreciate the hassle of doing this. Is there another user in the company that has virtually the same set up as yours, that you could possible clone their HDD onto yours?.

I've thought of that but with all the 'junkware' they force on our machines that are personalized to our login and passwords that they force us to change every 90 days, it wouldn't really be easy. I have a cloned drive from the end of 2016 but I don't remember the password on the login. The IT dept has a program installed that encrypts all of my user files and most of the installed programs. It uses the current login password to decrypt the files when the correct user logs into the machine. I may just wait to see what Noel comes up with. I do run a virus scan regularly as well as two different Malware scan programs and make multiple data backups (2 different external drives) on a regular basis - individual files as well as the Windows data backup and Windows Image. Unfortunately I don't have one from just before this issue started. I do thank you for your assistance though.

I would like to thank everyone for their assistance here. I am considering the issue closed due to having to get a replacement hard drive. One of our cats knocked the laptop off our kitchen table and, after several attempts to repair the hard drive (it was running at the time), my work is going to either replace the hard drive with a new one or replace the entire laptop if the original one is not under warranty.
