Just a basic question here....it seems like my music may be spread out in several different places.Surely that doesn't mean that there are multiple copies of it floating around on my hard drive, right ??. SO...if I were to delete 2 copies from 2 different areas (folders)...the other copy would still be there right ??

That is correct, they are pointing to the same place, but how did they get to 2 folders in the 1st place ?

Here`s what you need to do.

Make a folder in Music and label it with todays date, then go through the 1st folder of music you have and copy it to the that new folder. Verify the data, then delete the original folder. Now go to the other folder of music you say you have and copy it to the folder you just made, when it starts to copy, if you already have that music, it will ask you to replace it, just keep saying no until your done. Then delete that folder of music. When you`re done all your music will now be in the new folder you created today.

Don`t understand, just reply.

Keep all your music in the music folder and you should be ok.

I hope you understand the concept, the songs are in 1 place ( usually ) you just have 2 different shortcuts pointing to it.

Just check the path if you are ever in doubt.

Glad to help. :D

If you`re good mark it solved.

I keep my music in a folder on another hard drive and yes, I add it to my library. But it`s still in the same place. If I need to re install windows, my music is always safe.

You should always save data you don`t want to loose on another drive or partition.

You have tons of options if trying to do a full re-org of your music files.

I would defrag all non-SSD hard drives before doing this and after.

Where to find programs?

Download Duplicate File Finder at All Freeware

I have one partition designated for music files, I ripped my entire collection with CDex 3 years ago as 192-bit MP3s, backed it all up onto an external USB HD also, and many DVD-R too.

I use foobar2000 and 1by1 (freeware programs) for actually listening to them, highly recommended.

Before you go deleting any music files, do this: Create a delete folder in the directory that the "duplicate" files are in, put the files you want to delete in them. Once that's done check the main directory, the one you use for your music files, see if they play. If so, then you can go back to the other folders and delete the "delete" folder with the other (duplicate) music files in them.

Why go through this hassle??? Because if something strange is happening, like linking, you could find that deleting the files in one location, may delete them elsewhere, or at the very leas prevent the other copies from working.

I know this may sound strange, but an ounce of prevention is better than a ton of frustration. I do this a lot when deleting "duplicate" files to ensure I'm not deleting the wrong file, especially if it's a critical file, like a once in a life time music track ;)

Just a suggestion :)

Agree.
