Finally ordered a blu-ray player for my new samsung 63" plasma! :) I ended up buying a DMP-BD60 from newegg since the player has great reviews. But of course I have a few general questions about the new format.

1. I know a blu-ray disc is 25GB, for for an average blu-ray title how much space do they actually use?

2. What is the max bitrate for video+audio?

3. Will it look better than blu-ray rips?

Blu-ray rips... are rips... it means that they lose quality for a smaller size. So, yes, it'll look better with an original blu-ray disc. Out of the 25GB, I think they use 17 to 25GB, I THINK. I never really checked those because my PC, although having a blu-ray player, isn't HDCP compatible (*beep* DRM).

Max bitrate... I think it's 17MB/s. I'm probably wrong though.

Off-topic : I went "Woah!" when I saw the size of the TV you bought. Haha xD

Hahah yes I figured why go with a 50inch led when I can get a 63inch plasma for the same price! :D Plus plasma offers no video lag and still holds the best "lifelike" picture.

Thanks for the quick reply about the blu-ray. It's truly amazing the quality and size of these disks...

I found that the max video bit rate is actually 40mpbs!

There are even some BD-DL which can hold 50gb. Two layers of 25gb.

I'm gonna have a look for the article I read not too long ago about the industry possibly expanding the storage to about 70gb per disc. I'll post back if I can find it again.

Blu-ray.com - Blu-ray FAQ

That's 40 megabits per seconds (Mbps). Not megabyte (which would be MBps - Capital letters make a difference). In MB, it's 40 divided by 8 which means 5MB/s.

Enjoy your purchase.
