My computer is slow

I put out a post a day or two ago about my 64 bit Windows 7 on my Intel E6550 was slow. After the response I got from you guys I am going to stay with the 64 bit no matter what. So I figure I can go out and just build another computer and reload Windows 7 (64 bit from scratch) or find a program which I though you guys could help me with. There are dozens of programs out there that say it will make your computer faster, fix your registry, Hard Drive problems and so on. I had one of these programs about 15 years ago but I quit using them as I got better with computers but I feel I could use one now because I generally don't trust them but if it screws up my computer, so what, I have backups and I have other computers and I really don't care or mind if I have to format and re-load, it might give me something to do in my old age. So my question is can you recommend anything?

First, can you better define or quantify slow? Does it boot slowly, does it slowly move from screen to screen within the UI, does it take 35 seconds to open up Internet explorer?

There really isn't any good reason why a Core 2 Duo E6550 at 2.33ghz with 4GB or RAM running off modern SATA hard drives should be slow.

I can recommend you to make a clean install of Windows 7 x64 and tweak it disabling system services that you don't use, installing only programs that you know you will use, tweaking startup with MSConfig and using some type of light files/registry cleaner like the free CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) after installing and tweaking all what you need to use from now on.
Also, is good to NOT install always the newest versions of every application you use. Just do it if you REALLY need it. For example, I use Nero 7 instead of Nero 9, because it's light-weight and have all the tools that I need (burning CD/DVD, creating movies, ripping music, etc.).
That's the way I install Windows since lots of years ago, for me and my clients were I work.

Well a clean install should definitely speed up your PC but if you dont want to i sugest you to try tuneup utilities i personally think its the best software for repairing windows errors and boosting your performance.

My 2 cents for what its worth.

Do a clean install. Back up often (images etc in case of issues)

Stay away from the registery cleaners, performance boosters etc.
They are just a waste of money & do more harm than good.
With the exception of disk defragmenters (such as PerfectDisk, Diskeeper, Auslogics) as any are superior than Windows built in.


They only way to get better performance, is to upgrade hardware. Theres is no "miracle" software that can do the same.
