My hard disk space seems to be diminishing...

I have an Acer Aspire 5740G with 4GB of memory and a 640 GB HDD. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Until recently I had a lot of videos and audio files saved on my laptop, but seeing as the hard disk was filling up pretty rapidly, I decided to delete a lot of media files that I wasn't using.

The problem is that despite getting rid of these files, the amount of free disk space does not seem to have increased. On the contrary, it seems to have diminished!!

I have run all sorts of programs including CCleaner and Advanced SystemCare 6 (Pro) in an attempt to regain the space that I know I should have, but to no avail apparently.

Does anyone know what else I can do?

Did you empty the Recycle Bin after deleting the files?
Maybe the files are still in there.

Yes, done all of that.

I've just downloaded WinDirStat which looks as if it might be useful in identifying where all the space is being used.
