Solved My hard drive has been infected by Conduit

I really don't want to see my Super Hidden files. They are super hidden for a reason and until now I didn't even know their was such a thing.

"Super hidden" simply means hidden and system attributes are on for the file.
Probably most computer "technical" type people want to see all files.
Probably the average user doesn't care about seeing these files.
But there's more than one virus that changes file attributes to hidden, system.
This may - or may not - interest you.

Cottonball,

Do you think that I have finally purged my system of Conduit?

Cottonball,

I've discovered an excellent way to toggle JavaScript with Firefox. In version 23 and all subsequent versions they removed QuickJava "to prevent new users from damaging their systems". Gee thanks guys. I suspect that a lot of people might be interested, I googled more than sixty replies until I got the winner. Is there some way that I can post it. It refers you to the Author's page for information but that's written in what I believe is Japanese or Korean.

Re: Javascript

Cottonball,

I managed to find an add-on to Firefox called JS Script. It is supposed to offer two choices as a toggle, but it only offers one, which is quite sufficient. When you install it and restart Firefox, it adds an additional option under the Tools column. It simply says Enable Javascript (check mark). When the check shows JavaScript is on clicking on that line turns it off. When the check mark is not there JavaScript is off and clicking turns it on. Nothing could be simpler. In theory it is also supposed to put a "button" which is a colorful JS on the toolbar. That did not happen. I was referred to the author's page which was in an oriental language and thus useless to me. Two checks Tools, click as opposed to one click isn't going to kill me.

BTW, ZDNET has reported that IE10's security is like Swiss Cheese and patch Tuesday will "make everything perfect" LOL. I suspect that might have been the source of my problems.

I haven't done a standard install except for Firefox in years.

Thank you for all of your time and for the knowledge that I acquired along the way.

Javascript toggler for Firefox 23+

Cottonball, I did post that JS Switch solution to toggling JavaScript 23+ in the thread. I wrote it in Word first to catch spelling errors and then took it through the clipboard to a reply in the thread. I usually write Javascript and while I don't think that confuses anybody, Word corrects it to JavaScript for me. I really hope that this helps people. While I was working on my doctorate in math I taught math classes, and excusing the ego, as proven by the results on the Uniform Final Exams, the last four and one-half years out of five my class had the best grades out of the 20 to 60 sections (big school). So I think that I made it clear. I really wanted to be a professor, but I was a boomer, so the school hired and tenured faculty (math and everywhere else) for that population. Then came the lull after the boomers and the universities and colleges would have liked to fire half of their professors, but, since the professors were tenured, they couldn't. Needless to say they weren't hiring new ones, so it was out into the real world for me. More money, but not as nice a lifestyle. Gerry

GerryR,

Thanks for posting the information in the other thread. It will help someone, if not now, in the future.

God luck in your endeavours! :)

JS Script

It has already helped four of my friends. They were delighted with that solution. Almost all of my friends use Firefox, or Firefox and Chrome. None of us like IE10.

If four people (five if you include me) are happy to have that solution I certainly expect people who find this (JavaScript being on or off) to be a dilemma I hope that they will read it. It was in nice paragraph form when I entered and posted it. But when I copied it to show it to you, whatever Seven Form has to copy comments just jammed it all together into one big paragraph.

Cheers,

Gerry
