My Laptop messes up when resuming from sleep or hibernation

I'm having an issue with my Lenovo X230i Laptop. It seems when I first turn the thing on, it works just fine and dandy. I'm sorta on the go a lot, so I like to set my Laptop to sleep or hibernation mode so I can quickly restart it back up on the fly. However, for some reason whenever I resume from either mode, things often seem to fail on my Laptop, almost at random. For example...


- The little graphic that pops up whenever I increase or decrease the volume (or the brightness of the screen, etc.) will no longer show up upon resuming from sleep/hibernation. This one always happens.

- My USB Bluetooth dongle works great, but will fail to stay connected to anything upon resuming from sleep/hibernation (it will detect a bluetooth device and connect to them, but only for a few seconds). This one always seems to happen, too (which is becoming really inconvenient for some of the work I do on my Laptop).

- Built-in Webcam works great until, well... (This one seems to happen randomly)

- My Laptop's built-in touscreen, digital pen, and auto-screen rotation will also fail (also seems to happen randomly).

- Wifi takes nearly a minute or two to connect to my router after resuming from sleep/hibernation (it can find things nearby just fine, but won't do anything until a certain amount of time has passed). This does this every time, too, though Ethernet works just fine regardless.

- Some USB devices will simply fail to register when resuming, like my USB Keyboard or USB Headphones. Strangely, they'll receive power just fine, but my computer will do nothing with them.

- A capture device of mine will work great when I first start the computer up, but will completely fail upon resuming from sleep/hibernaton.


I don't know if this is a hardware or software issue, to tell you the truth. I'm almost positive it didn't do these things when I first got this laptop. I've actually been experiencing these problems for about half a year now, and I didn't mind it so much as first but now it seems to be getting worse (at times, anyway). I guess I could solve these issues by just simply shutting down my computer every time I use it, but I'm just curious if there really is a solution to any of these issues?

Could something I had installed be causing this? Could Windows just be goofing up? I had to install it myself when I got this Laptop, so could a format + fresh installation of Windows 7 help? Is there a less-drastic solution than that, hopefully? Any help will be appreciated.

Hello and welcome freezingicekirb now personally my machines do not take long to boot unlike it sounds yours does so I always switch off them when I am finished for the day (a reboot is often beneficial) and I am concerned re fire risks, surges etc etc Plus I find thta when running any of my laptops for any length of time they do start to stop working properly.

Now for starters I would do these
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs – you can leave out the /r switch in ckdsk if you feel it not necessary


if no fix then these

SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Premium
AdwCleaner Download
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If you are running Kaspersky as the main AV then it might need disabling it when trying ADW because it does not like it at times)

If you want a bit more out of your machine this is my bible Optimize Windows 7 I use it on all installs and machines that I fix for friends - it does mean you may if some of the tweaks are used you lose some of the "bling" like transparency but it isn't anything I find helpful just pretty For quicker boots and faster shut downs see points #16 and #19 (sub tutorials)

Edit: mate most of us here use CCleaner too to keep the clutter down too CCleaner - Free Download or try CCleaner Professional - Piriform < always use the piriform site for updating etc

Apologies for the delayed response. I did run some tests on my computer as-per your advice, but nothing seemed to show up.

However, I think I might have solved the problem though... hopefully, anyway. I'm thinking it was "Lenovo Power Management" that was causing the issues... I have no idea why or how, but when I removed it, things seemed to start working as intended. The Wifi now connects instantly whenever I resume from Sleep/Hibernation, and even the bluetooth functions correctly and connects to my devices (regardless if I tried using it before or after sleep/hibernation). Sadly, removing Power Management did get rid of the on-screen indicator that let's you know when you've increased/decreased the volume or screen brightness, but if it means fixing all my other issues, then I can live with it.

(Webcam turned out to be a whole different issue, however... but thankfully, I was able to get that resolved, too.)

Ok mate well it may well be just that I have had Toshiba laptops in the past and now and I always clean install with an ISO to get rid of the Toshiba bloat as it does mess with the system just like it seems the Lenovo stuff has with your machine.

Losing those features I think is not a big deal I reckon eh?

Now if you want a little more out of your machine this is my bible when installing Windows and fixing friends machine and if you don't mind losing some of the "bling" like transparency it really speeds things up and makes the machine more "efficient".

Optimize Windows 7 < if you need a hand with anything then Brink is just brilliant and really so helpful

Issue is likely just task scheduler stopping it

I had a similar issue with another program. Here is what you have to do.

1) Go into the start menu, search for task scheduler, and open it.

2) In the upper left click on task scheduler library.

3) Right click on each task and select properties, then click the settings tab in the new window.

4) Uncheck "Stop the task if it runs longer than 3 days" and click OK.

Problem solved.
