My PC doesn't like new USB devices...

I upgraded to Win7 the day after it's release, from WinXP. Did a new install. Things have worked just fine for me after that, except for a driver that I needed to update in the first couple of days (HP scanner didn't get recognized, but update was released a day or two later and all was good then).

Anyway, recently I have been having problems where if I try and plug in a new (to this PC) USB device, it will try and load the drivers, but it fails. Generally, these are various USB Flash drives, but I also received an iPod Touch for Xmas, and the same thing happens with it. Also happens with a digital camera and it's memory card (either via an adapter to directly read the card, or via a USB cable directly to the camera).

I know the devices work because I can access them on other PCs (but those are all XP boxes), and I know the USB port on my Win7 box works because I have a Flash Drive I use daily that still works, as well as several USB peripherals that work fine (HP printer, Logitech wireless mouse, etc).

Any suggestions on what might be going on or what to do here????

Hi Rassi, welcome to the forums
I think you will need to provide more info:
- What is the USB device you are trying to plug in and the driver update fails (name and model if possible)
- Same thing for the digital camera

Can you also fill in your system specs? Your problem might be a mixture of hardware and software problems / incompatibility, hence the specifics are needed.

Finally, when you say the USB ports are working, it might not be the case for all. There are different USB connections on your Motherboards, one for each pair of USB ports. Have you tried to connect to the ones you are sure they are working?

Welcome and we will try and help.

I agree with Wally. You need to give us a little more information.
My quick guess is that your motherboard firmware may be the problem with your USB port drivers.
Next time you start your computer and the black screen shows up hit the pause key to stop it so you can try and get your bios version. Hit any key to proceed on.
Then we can check and see if you have the latest for Win7.

The first item I noticed the problem with was my iPod Touch (believe it's a 2nd gen, it's 8 GB). Then, one of my digital cameras, a Casio EX-S10A (it's in the Exilim line). Also tried reading it's memory card with a USB card reader, a Verbatim miniSD/SD reader model #96504. Also tried a couple various USB flash drives...don't have specific model numbers on those - one was a Verbatim, another was a 2GB Lexar, another was a 4GB Sandisk Cruizer.

The system has several USB ports on the back, and 2 on the front (top). I also have a 7-port USB hub. I have Rally 16GB USB Flash drive that will run fine from any of these USB ports. I tried the "problematic" items in various ports - in the hub, in the ports on the top, and in a port on the back. No go.

Let me know if more info would help.

I suggest you start by updating your BIOS, yours is from Sept/2008. I can't post a link to the drivers since Asus uses flash for the software updates, not possible to link

Also, I meant for you to fill in the specs on the appropriate part of your profile, if possible. you can get there by clicking on "My system specs" on the left lower corner of your posts. It is not being picky; when you do that, people don't have to refer to this post to find something, and they will be available on any of your posts, on any thread.

thanks for the tip - I have updated my profile.

My bios version is 1238, and if you look that up on ASUS's website, that appears to be the latest version. Not sure why mine reports that earlier date - ASUS shows 1238 as having a date in Feb 2009.

Other suggestions?

Check your Device Manager if any device has a yellow triangle besides it. That would be a problematic device

Maybe there are older drivers in the hidden devices that block. Open an elevated Command Prompt and type or paste:

SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1

then hit Enter. Then type:

devmgmt.msc

and hit Enter. Now you are in Device manager. Click on the View tab and go to Show hidden devices. Now you will see all the hidden USB ports. Uninstall all the drivers (also the ones where nothing is atttached) that you do not absolutely need and reboot. What you do with this operation is to delete all legacy drivers that might linger around and block things. It may be a long shot, but one never knows what is hidden on the system.
