Hi,

I have Windows 7 Home premium and running for many years on Dell 1558. Its genuine and shipped with Dell laptop and all of a sudden it throws this below error:

I can only think it's the result of a 'race condition' - where something gets in the way of the Software Protection Service.

I actually had to reinstall from scratch 3 days ago, using Windows 7 DVD (supplied with Laptop) as my old HDD went bad. It doesn't even ask for serial/key while installing and everything worked fine. But since then, it pops up this annoying window (once a day) everyday. I rebooted laptop and verified genuinity of Windows 7 online and every time it passed the test.

Now my Windows 7 is fully up-to-date (with updates) and still popping up and its really annoying. I would like to get it fixed forever.

I heard somewhere that improper drivers installation too could cause this issue and I have one "unknown device" in Device manager. Should I fix that error to get rid of this?

What media did you use for the reinstall?

If you didn't use the Recovery media from your manufacturer, then...

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.


You may need to activate by phone.

It was reinstalled by Dell Engineer using "Windows 7 reinstall DVD" and product key matches.

Whenever I verify online and/or see the properties it always shows "genuine". The only thing is that this pop-up comes and go. Though it's not impacting any of my work or laptop capability but just annoying to receive that message.

What you have is a race condition - which by the nature of the beast isn't generally susceptible to normal troubleshooting methods.
It's most often related to security software getting in the way of the Software Protection Service.
What AV is installed? what other security software is installed?
