Mysteriously deleted specific files? What reason?

Not sure where this goes but this seemed fitting.



Twice, the computer has mysteriously deleted every file and folder on D:/ drive whose names start with 0-J.
For a very specific last folder starting with the letter J, inside it the 0-J files and folders were deleted but not the folder itself.

This has happened twice, any idea what's causing it? I'm only interested in preventing further deletions, not data recovery.



The last thing I remember changing is installing unsigned test qualcomm drivers. There was also a recent period where i turned off win7's firewall for a short while and half my drives went inaccessable for no reason, but that never happened again.

I also ran win7's default error checking tool twice and got nothing. WD diag tool shows nothing wrong. I strongly suspect a virus or something but malwarebytes and kaspersky found nothing.


Unfortunately windows 7 has no file modification logging, or this would be easy.

My recommendation is check on the off chance that somebody unintentionally pulled ur drive without securely expelling it. what's more, on the note about the documents been imperceptible, if the records have been turned undetectable they would even now consume space on the drive. Did u saw a decrease in the free space?

Yeah, hard drive space went down. The drives never unplugged, it is a home pc.




I suspect HDD failing, but that's not so clean as to delete specific lettered files.


Something running a deletion script is the likely idea, reoccursively deleting 0-J including in subfolders fits that profile.



It could be remote code execution, a virus, or maybe poorly coded uninstall files (i did multiple reinstalls of some programs).


It hasnt reoccured for a month so i gave up trying to figure it out.
Really needed file modification logs.
