Need help converting various file types to a dvd format

I have downloaded various video clips from different websites and would like to copy or burn then to blank DVD's. However, I am not that good with computers and don't exactly know how. I have a DVD burning software which I have taken my own personal DVDs and made a copy of them (which is not illegal by the way, I made sure and checked that). But I don't know how to do the same with various video files I have downloaded from the internet or that friends have emailed to me. Some of the files types include AVI, and MKV file types, others I cant find out what kind of file it is. I can play these on my computer and watch them, but I would like to maybe compile the video files and put hard copies of them on DVDs.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Suggest you conver all to .avi or .wmv. Then you can compile them with Windows Live Movie Maker. See also this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/movie-maker

I've been looking around for literally years for a good program and whilst convertxtodvd is generally good, apart from it's $99 price tag, there are a few problems.

I have experienced considerable problems with blocking, or what might be called "macroblocking", and results that will not play on software players, stand alone players and will even crash some stand alone players. Regardless of whether you use Imgburn or VSO to the the actual burn. For TV shows, don't try to squeeze too many episodes on one disk, because that will result in really poor results.

You really have to tweak settings until you get thing right, and that can take alot of fiddling. On the positive side, it is quick, stable and has free menu templates.

A free program that is making some headway into the conversion arena is AVSTODVD. It supports multiple formats and menus. It is much slower than ConvertxTODVD, but generally gives good results.

Another one is DVDFLick, but it seems to have issues with audio sync, and hasn't been updated in years. IIRC, the last version 1.3.0.7 was released in June 2009.

But - just because I've had problems with several programs, that doesn't mean that others haven't got them working perfectly.

The bootom line - the best program is the one that you understand the best, and gives you the results you want with the minimum of fuss. You could try googling "Best free video converters". There are lots of reviews out there.

Either way, I'd recommend a little research.

Okay I did what yall said and successfully converted all my video files to the AVI format... but now every time I try to burn them to a blank DVD it wont work.

I know it works with DVD Flick. But about the other programs I cannot say.

If you use this to burn to DVD you won't need to convert them first.
