Solved Need Help Upgrading NVIDIA Driver!

Hi,

I have a HP Pavilion zd7060ea, that comes with a NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5600, and the driver HP provides for it is XP only and very old (2003). So I went to LaptopVideo2Go, and found a much more recent modded driver for it, 175.80. The only problem, is that it is an XP driver. I upgraded my notebook to Windows 7 from XP, and everything works fine, except driver for the graphics. So, I found out, that there is a 175.80 for Vista driver (Vista driver works fine on 7), but the 175.80 Vista driver is not modded, meaning it won't work on my graphics card. Could someone please help me get it working!

No because there is no support in the actual driver files for that GPU. It is one thing to add the DevID to the INF so that a driver will install, but there is no way to mod the actual driver files to work with the GPU. You're basically stuck with the one you have installed now.

So whats the point of installing modded drivers if it doesnt even work with the GPU anyways? and why does everyone use modded drivers then, if ur statement is correct?

In the case of drivers for laptops, in order to get the desktop version to install. Most laptop GPU's are based on a desktop chip, so that is why adding the DevID will allow them to install, and why the driver actually works.

Despite saying they are modded the only thing that is modded is the INF by adding the DevID of the various laptop GPU's. There is no modding of the actual driver files, unless you want to (or can find someone, and I doubt there is) attempt to reverse engineer them to add the required support for the older GPU's. That is why a place like laptopvideo2go doesn't have anything beyind a XP driver for yours, Nvidia dropped support for it in the drivers, so there iss no point ni adding the DevID to the Vista or Windows 7 INF's.

98.16 is the last driver by NVIDIA to support Vista for FX series. So would I be able to upgrade from 97.35 to 98.16?

I'm not sure. Notebook manufacturers tend to use custom device IDs for their onboard graphics, and generic driver installers may not recognize them.

Something like that was true of my cheap Compaq CQ50-105NR (from 2008). It uses an nVidia 8200M graphics chip. The drivers downloaded from nVidia would not install. However, once I installed the Vista drivers from Compaq (HP), I later received actual Win7 drivers through Windows Update. I'm currently using the latest WHQL mobile graphics drivers from nVidia.
