Since this is my first post, let me thank all those who answer our questions and all the admin(s) who make this site possible

i recently built a quad core computer with the intention of exploiting 64 bits programs but i'm so frustrated with Windows 7 that i'm about to try installing win2000 Pro on the new hardware

the new computer comprise of:

Antec P182 silent case
750W Thermaltake PSU
Intel motherboard extreme edition DP55KG (P55 chipset)
Intel CPU i7 860 (2.8MHz HyperThreads Quadcore)
Corsair liquid CPU Cooler
Kingston DDR3 (2 x 2Gb @ 1600MHz)
Asus ENGTS250 DK (1G ram onboard) video card
Optical drive Asus CD/DVD RW Burner
WD Raptor 10,000rpm for OS (1 x 150Gb)(new & formated by Windows7 during installation)
WD Green Caviar ( 1 x 2Tb @ 7,200rpm)
WD Green Caviar ( 3 x 2Tb @ 5,400rpm)

Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) Operating System was a charm to install, it did show some of the potential of the new hardward
but the defaults of Windows 7 are retarded to say the less (fit for a 5 yo but a pain for anyone wanting to manage the OS) maybe a great OS for an iPod?

i have been trying to fallow your forum's instructions to change those defaults but i am not getting anywhere near having an operating system that i could be productif. Fact is ; i'm pulling my hair and bashing my head against the wall.

Here what've i tried :

-- selected "Show hidden files, folders, or drives"
-- deselected "Hide extensions for known file types"
-- deleted the library shortcut from the taskbar
-- deleted Window Media Player from the taskbar
-- activated Quick Launch
-- changed the size of the icons in taskbar to "small"
-- changed the size of the icons in desktop to "small"
-- created shortcut to desktop in the taskbar
-- created shortcut to "computer" in the taskbar but i lost my shortcut to "desktop" in the doing

i am a multitasker and i am from the old school of learning , i don't put any documents on the same physical hard drive as my programs because there is only one arm per hard drive.
if it's besy reading/writing data on a different sector of that drive , it can't be where it needs to be to exploit the program it's supposed to work with ,
i use "my computer" taskbar shortcut to create and navigate an elaborated filing system --- drives / folder / sub-folders ....
Also i have no need for Window Media Player because because i never use it ; VLC Player does a much better job all arround and i don't even need to croud my desktop or taskbar with a shortcut for it, ... double clicking a file will open it with VLC if it is the "by default program" i selected for that given extension.

The 3 most important buttons on my taskbar are:
-- a shortcut to my computer like the one found in the Start window
-- a shortcut to my desktop
-- a shortcut to interner explorer
those 3 shortcut buttons must be next to the start button
shortcut to "My Computer" and "Internet Explorer" must be static

Shortcut to "my computer"
the shortcut i created on my taskbar using your instructions is useless because
if i click it and select I:/ and then open folder xxx , this is what will come up next time i click it.
What I need a shortcut that behave like the one found on the Start window
i want a static button that opens a new windows & taskbar shortcut to "My Computer" when i click it and everytime i click it. ( 5 open folders requires 5 different taskbar shortcut with folder's names on them) Having to back all the way to "My Computer" to access a new folder doesn't work , because i need several open folder at once

Shortcut to "my desktop"
i lost that when i created the shortcut button to "My Computer" on the taskbar

Shortcut to "Interner Explorer"
the (Windows 7 by default shortcut) found on my taskbar is useless ,
i need a static shortcut button to Internet Explorer on my taskbar, one that opens a new window to my selected home page and adds a new shortcut button in the taskbar for every new page i open. Everytime i click on the static shortcut for Internet Explorer a new window should open to my homepage. if i wanted work with the "add new tab" bull***t" i would be working with FireFox.

is there a way to get Windows 7 to deliver those simple requirements without paying thousands of dollars to a hacker to re-write Windows retarded defaults ??

please someone, anyone ! Point me in the right direction before i attempt to reformat and install Windows 2000 Pro, i'm not even sure the new hardware has drivers for win2k. if not for me , maybe for my dog. She thinks we're in hell ever since i've install Window 7.

thanks in advance .................... BlueDove

BlueDove, Welcome to SevenForums, What I do when I want a new explorer browser window open is to right click on the icon on taskbar and select Internet Explorer. You say you activated The Quick Launch that has a explorer icon that opens a new window. Hope that you enjoy your stay here at SF. :D
Oh and the Superbar comes with a show desktop button that if you click on it it will do the job!

Wow...
Sure Win7 has a few changes to make things efficient and cleaner, but if you want to have the look and feel of a stone tablet and nail, try looking for some settings.
Your Internet Explorer woes, I found your solution by looking in the most obvious place. It took 3 mouse clicks .
Your Taskbar woes, the solution is also in the most obvious place. 2 mouse clicks.
Windows 7. Its just that easy.

It seems your absolutely frustrated with this... so go outside and calm down. Clear your head. Then return to solve your problems. If you really cant get it, then come back and ask us nicely. Please dont vent frustrations, you are less likely to get the answer you want.

You have a pretty long shopping list there. ;)

...i want a static button that opens a new windows & taskbar shortcut to "My Computer" when i click it and everytime i click it. ( 5 open folders requires 5 different taskbar shortcut with folder's names on them) Having to back all the way to "My Computer" to access a new folder doesn't work , because i need several open folder at once...
To try and chisel at least one problem off the list, might I recommend Q-Dir?

Like you, I often want to have several Windows Explorer windows open at once. This does it quite nicely. Very handy for sorting lots and lots of files to different locations. :)

thanks for the welcome
i hope to find some answers to my problems here

right clicking the Internet Explorer and then selecting the Internet Explorer Option does what i need but i can do it with a single left click in Windows 2000Pro
right clicking -- and left clicking the option takes me 3 times as long, it require more mental processing. i would like to change the default the button i have to do it with a single left clic.
i regards to "Quick Launch " it no longer has anything in it,
it was making uge buttons to the left of the "<<" and was taking up the whole task bar , i didn't care to go to the Quick Launch everytime i need to google something anyway

the fix i need is for the default shortcut button on the task bar , it needs to be the 3rd button from the Start button,

not sure what is a superbar but i will search that next

thanks for trying ............ BlueDove

I understand your problems with the Internet Explorer Icon, spose that I am just use to it now. Mouse over it and all the windows that are open just pop up and I pick the one I want. And if you get enough open then you get a list. I start shutting down some then because my brain is use to pictures.. Hope things work out for you enjoy!

Based on the tone of the OPs initial post, I feel it would be best to simply let him reinstall Windows 2000. It seems to be what he wants to do anyway, and the feel of the post is very "trollish" in my opinion. I don't think someone posts here legitimately asking to be convinced NOT to remove Windows 7. He is clearly dissatisfied with the superior features in 7 and will be happier rolling back to a 10 year old OS.

Thanks a lot for the link showing the picture of that tiny (no anme) button and the clarification , that resolve the issue i had losing the desktop shortcut , it's smaller and it does everything it needs

Hello BlueDove,

Opening file and/or folder in 1 click is not good for me because i use 2 single clicks to edit their names , i also use 2 single click and a right to copy their names or paste a new name on them.
a friend email me a link to your tutorial on Quick Launch , it is the reason i found your forum, i did try a few other links that were at the botom of the page ..... i did get great success with some and no success with others. Thanks for the link the index , i will go over them slowly,

the tutorial on Taskbar Button Grouping - Enable or Disable
is a small part of the fix i'm looking for ,
idealy i would love some guidance to create a taskbar like the one jimwillsher posted on your Quick Launch tutorial (page 5)

http://www.sevenforums.com/attachme...34504-quick-launch-enable-disable-capture.png

his taskbar seems to everything i'm looking for in a taskbar
i just don't know what keywords to use in my search
a taskbar like that seems to emulate Win XP and my Win2000Pro

BlueDove,

From that screenshot, he has Quick Launch enabled and dragged over to the far left of the taskbar, and is using buttons instead of icons on the taskbar.

For the best help though, it would be better to create a new thread for each different issue instead of trying to get them all answered in one post. This way there will be less confusion with all the different issues and possible solutions for them getting mixed up.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

i was the man who swore i would never use a computer. but my doctor forced me to use one, to learn to cope with what we can't cure. That's been 10 years now and i'm still coping. Windows 2000 had its days, it was a great system but it is becoming a dinosaur. Hell ! i'm starting to feel like i'm the dinosaur. People my age don't text message on a blackberry, they're dropping like flies, just lost my dearest friend few days ago, his heart gave out.

development on light application(32bits) such as virtual dubs ended years ago, and the heavier application are focussing on the 64bits platform ---- for example i believe that Adobe CS5 is only offered as a 64bits platform ----

Windows 7 offers some wonderfull feateres such as the ability to nest a 32 bits platform over a 64bits platform

Internet Explorer 8 with it's 100% , 125% , 150% is a godsent for an aging person who won't ware reading glasses.

the snipping tool looks like a real cleaver apps too. no longer need to to do print screen and photoshop it to crop out the small part i want, and i'm sure that in time , i will discover more

The part of Windows 7 with which i struggle most with is its defaults , the lack of friendlyness to a user who wants to manage the operation system,
i just can't fugure some of it's logic, and the giant icons bugs my little brain
perhaps when i'am near blind i will love them ??

not having made the transition to Win XP or Vista when they came out means that todays transition is a bigger struggle , but since it looks like i'm gonna be arround for a few more years , i have to make the transition. i have see some of your members with some smart taskbar , if i could get something like that , the transition would be so much easier

PS: the choice of words in the title for the topic is nothing more than my sarcastic way of saying i don't did it, "I just don't understand the new default" it seems take more clicks to get to the same destination

Holding the shift key as you click items on the taskbar allows as many windows to open as clicked (IE, Firefox, Explorer, etc). Hit the windows key+tab key to find the window you want, Win+D shows the desktop.

Google the Master List of Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts and pick out the ones you find useful.

@Brinks

BlueDove,

From that screenshot, he has Quick Launch enabled and dragged over to the far left of the taskbar, and is using buttons instead of icons on the taskbar.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Wow, thanks Brink , i would never had guessed that on my own , that make sense now , it explain why i saw the picture in the reply for your tutorial on Quick Launch,
i thought i was looking at small icons(shortcuts) that had been pinned to the taskbar.

I'm laughing at ignorance now .... no wonder i was pulling my hair .... i couldn't figure how to make 2 sets of buttons with different behaviors ... that's so funny

Ok , i will read the whole tutorial over (a few times if needed) and try to do what he did. Looks like that could work for me.

once again, many thanks Shawn

OK guys , Brink pointed me in the right direction,
my new taskbar does everything i was hoping for

a Left Quick Launch without text and title + "taskbar buttons" set to "Never combine" in priority does everything i was hoping for. Perfect fix . i now have a slim task bar that is ready to multitask
i did a reboot didn't loose the settings,
now i can't stop :roflmao:at all the fixes i tried to come up with these past 2 days

Thanks again Brink, i will go through your list of tutorials, lots of good stuff there
