Need real help to increase fps on my laptop

Earlier this year I got a HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC. Its processor is an Intel Core i7-2630QM with a CPU of 2.00GHz. It has 4GB installed RAM but the computer can use hard drive memory as ram so I've got about 8GB. It is a 64-bit OS. 1GB graphics card.

When I'm playing minecraft on render normal I only get 10-15 fps. And if I put it down to tiny it gets up to 90 fps. Yes that fps is high but for what i sacrifice for is its not worth it at all. I turn down all the graphics in game and on the graphics card. Also when I play Assassins Creed Brotherhood I only get around 10-20 fps on very low graphics. I would like just to be able to get my fps so it drops no less than 20 fps or else I cant stand it.

I have been on many sites for weeks looking around for how to increase it. But none of it works. I change my power settings, change my graphics, get game booster, basically everything ive seen. But none of it helps. And dont say optifine or something like that for minecraft. The fps I told you is with Optifine on.

Now I am looking for some real help. And i know its not my hardware because my brother has a toshiba with 32-bit operating system, 1GB graphics card, 4GB ram and a intel core i5 2.30GHz processor. So we are about even. And he doesnt even know about these mods and he sits on 120+ fps on render distance far.

I believe it may have something to do with the actual system files. Like somethings stopping it from getting higher but the thing is I've gotten up to 400+ fps by flying up high so there is nothing to load while looking around and aswell zoomed in with optifine. And my friend with a very old desktop computer with only a old 1.8GHz processor and 4GB of ram was at 700+ fps on normal ground, not a flat grass map or anything. Not sure what graphics card he has but i think it would only be 1GB also.

My computer seems to run everything but games flawlessly.

Could anyone with actually helpful things please tell me.

When looking up stuff about this computer the only complaints were that the computer gets hot very fast. would that have anything to do with it?

Hello and welcome to the Forums, Zalunardo.

First thing you'll want to check when your acquired performance does not equal your specs when gaming is to ensure your CPU or GPU clocks are not being throttled down when you're gaming, especially for extended periods of time for whatever reason. (Excessive temperatures, built in throttling mechanisms etc)

Here's a simple experiment you can perform to validate whether or not your laptop has a throttling problem:-

1. Download these CPU and GPU monitoring programs:-

GPUz:-

GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility


2. Run your desired game in windowed mode, and have those two utlities (GPUz and CoreTemp) above running simultaneously next to the program window.

Take note of the clocks/frequencies and temperatures that those two applications are displaying while running the game.

For example:-

Your specs indicate that you've an i7 2630QM that should be running at 2.0 GHz when the cores are engaged and a Radeon 6770M which has default 3D performance clocks of 675 MHz - 725 MHz and a 800 MHz for the Memory as per this website:-

When your laptop is engaged in High Performance mode and running a game, GPUz and CoreTemp should indicate the clocks I've mentioned above in the sensors tab of the application window for GPUz and CoreTemp's main application window.





(Those are captures from my own laptop running a CPU intensive video encoding progam with no active 3D applications or games running in the background which accounts for the idle clocks on the graphics card, specs are in My System Specs on my post)


3. If the clocks aren't displayed as expected, you may have a throttling problem.

The cause can be determined, again, from looking at the programs.

Temperatures above 85 - 90C may force the system to downclock the CPU and GPU speeds, leading to drastically reduced performance on your end.

There could be other causes too, but we'll get to that when I've received your feedback.

EDIT:- Ensure that you've run the above procedure with the dedicated video card (6770M) on your system, not the Intel integrated graphics card.

I never expected to get such a detailed answer.
I downloaded the program and the cpu was perfectly fine with no stress on it. And so was the gpu. all the temps and load was fine for both. but what i didnt notice with the gpu is outlined in these photos.

sorry i do not know how to drag a pic into a comment yet because i am new to this site. as you can see the gpu clock is only 100mhz and the memory 41mhz. and even when im doing nothing the sencors say they are both at max. and it also says that is a 32-bit graphics card. would these things effect fps? but nothing else seems bad with the gpu temp not goin ofver 50 celcius and the processor going over 70 degrese celcius. by what the gpuz program says, in the areas i outlinesd on the photo the intel one is a whole lot better
