Adding an SSD drive would do more than any optimization. That's not to say optimization is useless, marsmimer is right and you should follow the steps at the link...

Hello nithishwin7user. In addition to the above, you can try the following to speed up Windows 7 startup:

Go to Start :orb: -- Type 'services.msc' -- Hit Enter -- Now find "Superfetch" and make sure it is set to automatic and is running.

Install the following Microsoft hotfixes:

1. An update that improves the startup performance of Windows 7 and of Windows Server 2008 R2 is available
2. The Windows 7 startup process is slow when you create many restore points
3. The startup process is delayed on a computer that has a large hard disk installed and is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

If the above updates were already there, then no problem, proceed ahead.

Go here: Windows Software Development Kit (SDK) for Windows 8 and download the SDK. This SDK meant for Windows 8 works flawlessly with Windows 7 so don't you worry!

Now run the setup, choose install location and when you're asked to select the components to install, choose ONLY "Windows Performance Toolkit" and click Install.

Once installation completes, you HAVE to restart the system.

Now after rebooting, click Start :orb: , type 'cmd', right click 'cmd' in the results and click 'Run as administrator'.

Now enter the following command:

Code:
xbootmgr -trace boot -prepSystem -verboseReadyBoot
and hit Enter. System will be restarted 6 times. Do NOT use the computer till the entire process finishes. Don't click anything (don't click Finish or Cancel in the white box after every reboot).

Once all reboots are done, see if there's a change in the startup time (there will be :) ).

Hope this helped. Also don't forget to disable unnecessary startup items and services using msconfig utility.

What does the xboot command do?

Thanks Greg. I don't see how seeing the trace logs can do anything to performance though.:sarc:

What does the xboot command do?

That command shuts your system down, makes a boot trace and records the files accessed (with their order of access) during start up (even after logging in upto 1 or 2 minutes). The command then uses the Windows inbuilt defragmenter to arrange those files and moves them to the beginning of the disk (fastest disk access zone) and physically arranges them in the order of access (which was recorded in the trace) so as to reduce disk seek time as much as possible, which results in the fastest loading of files possible, thus reducing boot time.

After this is done, the further restarts trains superfetch to load the files in the fastest way possible by making traces again and again. Thus Windows ultimately learns in what order to load the startup files so that time required is minimum (and they were already physically arranged on the HD after the second reboot the best possible way and in the fastest disk access zone, i.e the outer tracks of the disk).

There are a total of 6 reboots. Summarizing:

Command run - System reboots - 1st trace is made - windows defragmenter is run and files are arranged as already explained - system reboots - another trace is made - superfetch is trained to load files the the best and fastest possible way - this is repeated 4 times - process finishes.

I hope this explains and answers all questions raised and puts down all pointed fingers being pointed at me.

Thanks for understanding. And I was NOT being rude.

Oh well, that's the exact place where I learnt this. I even have that entire page saved on my hard disk, in case I forget the way. But does that mean I am copying-pasting stuff? I have the entire process of doing it totally mugged up, exactly like you mugged up the English alphabets while you were a kid.

Now the question: Were you born with the English alphabets already learnt? Or did someone teach you? I suppose it's the latter. Then I should say the English alphabets you write today is the copyrighted content of the person who taught them to you, right? And you should always mention his/her name while you use the English alphabets, or it'll be a copyright breach, right?

In a very similar way, here's my case: I was not born with the xbootmgr command and its way of using already written into my brain. Everybody learns things from others.

You DID NOT invent them. Neither did I. Whatever you know today, is, I suppose, learnt from somewhere else, right? Then why don't you mention your source of learning with every post you do, huh?

Anyone can do a google search and copy paste a link to a particular article here at 7Forums. It's a natural human psychology that a person (OPs here) is most probably going to ignore redirections and eagerly read well written answers in posts.

What is the purpose of a forum if everyone can do a simple google search to find an answer, huh? Just keep posting links or just simply "quote a part of the original and post the link of the source", like you do on the News subforums.

I learn things from places, like you do, not born already learned. That does not necessarily mean you have to mention the source unless and until you are simply copy-pasting.

You learn something from someone, then explain it to others in your own language, does that mean a copyright breach?

Eagerly waiting for your reply, britton30.

If I may. I really don't know the method the Forum prefers in posting information and help. Except that Tutorials are always welcomed by the Bosses. I think we all have notice posts edited by the Boss adding a Tutorial when appropriate.
I do post information that I already have stored in my three brain cells. Then I do this or some close variation of.

1. Post Tutorials from this site with a short explanation of the reasoning for such a suggestion.
a. Because they have been proven to work.
b. They are safe.
c. The OP learns of our great Tutorials.
2. Post to a Microsoft site.
a. They are safe
b. They are informative.
c. Sometimes will help solve the problem.
3. If this doesn't solve the OP's problem I will inform the OP that I will go to the Ranch (VIP) and ask for others to help.

*This way the OP should understand my thoughts and knowledge and the reasoning I'm using.
*Posting the web sites listed above also show that I have spent the time to give them a choice and suggestion to more information from people with more knowledge than I have personally.
*This method should show the OP that I don't know any more information that will help but I will try to find someone who does if I can.
* I do cut and past at times but always try to inform the readers where the cut and paste came from. To me that is the honest and proper way.

PS: Finding someone with more knowledge than I have is really quiet easy.

Sometime my answers to a problem aren't as good as I think they are. So others will come to my and the OP's rescue.

I thank them all for doing that.

Thanks Mr. Jack for that post of yours, well explained.

Few things I would like to mention:

1. NONE of my current 505 posts is a copy-pasted content from anywhere. To find out if I'm lying or not, do this:

Select and copy any sentence from my post and paste it in the Google search box within double quotes. For example,

Consider post #7 in this thread. Let's pick up a sentence like "Now run the setup, choose install location and when you're asked to select the components to install, choose ONLY "Windows Performance Toolkit" and click Install". Copy paste this into Google within quotes. Give a hard hit on the Enter button on your keyboard and voila! The results! Now post back the link from where I copied right here.

2. Every method/little tutorials/suggestions that I post here have already been tried by me and has proven to work for me, but it's still not necessary that the said method will work for the OP. I don't post anything here just by doing Google search, modifying the language unless and until I have tried doing that already.

3. OPs Humans generally ignore going through links and prefer straight away answers. What if I had done this post:

instead of doing post #7 in this thread?

Do you think the OP would have done the hard work of going through that post, then going even one link further to know from where to download and how to install WPT? And go even one more link further to know which hotfixes he needed to install in order to speed up Windows? Most probably not. He might not have even been knowing what he's actually doing and if it's right. But he was happy with my post atleast as far as I can see and even got his problem solved.

Another thing that needs a mention: Mr. Jack, I was not pointing you anywhere in this post except saying thanks in the first line.

Windows 7 missing folder

I went to create a new folder under documents and won't, then tried it elsewhere (desktop etc) and it shows me a shortcut to create a new folder, and wants me to browse to it. I don't know where to make it browse to, to even see if it works or not. Anyone know here?
Thanks, Linda

Just rightclick in the Documents folder and select New>Folder, type its name in the box given and highlighted, hit Enter and you have the folder ready to drag files into, open, or move anywhere you want via the left-hand Explorer bar. Just be sure to hold onto the left click until the bar stops unfolding so you can drop it in the correct folder.

New Folder creation, does not work

The "new folder button" does nothing.. it does not work by right clicking any more. But when I right cick the desk top it at least gives me the choice of a "short cut to new folder".. if I click it, it gives the "browse to option". But I don't know where to browse it to?

You might have damaged or corrupt system files. Try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt. Type cmd in the start menu search box. Right-click cmd.exe in the upper panel and select Run as administrator. In the command prompt window that opens up (a black screen with white letters) type in sfc /scannow at the flashing cursor, click Enter. Note the space between sfc and /scannow. (Option two, this tutorial, shows what you should see.)

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and immediately reboot the computer after each scan. If you see "No integrity violations were found" after the first scan, you don't have to run any more SFC scans.
