Need USB 3.1

Hi all I got a USB Samsung D3 2TB external drive plugged into a USB 3 3.0 port ...... its now telling me on start up it could work faster on a newer USB 3.1 port, I have a free PCI Express 2.0 XT Slot, left on my Asus Maximus Vl Formula Main board, also on this board sure I noticed USB 3 plug to add front slot USB 3, but not sure if they would be 3.0 or 3.1 ?

so my question is what's my best options to get USB 3.1 ..... any help advise welcome

I've just checked your mobo specs and that board only has 2.0 & 3.0 ports - https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_VI_FORMULA/specifications/

TBH I don't think you would gain anything as i'm sure the 3.0 will be faster than the drive can transfer anyway.

ok thanks for your advise, why would my D3 tell this advise on start up then if advantages would be minimal

3.1 is double the (potential) speed of 3.0, but as you point out, both the device and the mobo only support 3.0 anyway.

OP: Check your cabling is fully 3.0 compliant. I sometimes get similar messages if I plug into a USB3 port with a generic cable.

As z3r010 pointed out your motherboard does not support USB 3.1.

I would suggest that you check and see if you have drivers for USB 3.0 installed. They should be on your motherboard CD if you need them.

I have no idea why your Samsung D3 is posting that information flag on your system.

Means you haven't installed the 3.0 driver off the cd that came with the board and or not connecting the device to a 3.0 blue usb port.

ok yes I get your drift but its in a blue port ? USB 3 and all my drivers are upto date says driver booster 3 ...... I do have a intense 1TB drive on USB 2 in a usb port 2

Just to add an additional note. To get the speed of USB 3.0 from things such as portable hard drives have to be designed for USB 3 & are connected by a heavier USB cable. Of course they also have to be plugged into a USB 3 port.

USB 2 devices will work perfectly plugged into a USB 3 port but they will only run at USB 2 speed. Also a USB 3 device plugged into a USB 2 port will only run at USB 2 speed.

could u give an example of heavier USB cable ? are there standards or something u can buy ?

I was told gold tipped cables where no better than normal cables where HDMI is concerned would this be true for USB ?

No hdmi gold are indeed high speed and a lot better
usb3 no telling like already said the speed will be in the hard drive in the enclosure mostly

Pretty much why I never consider devises like you have because it comes with a hdd in it and can not be changed out
I sort of stick with empty enclosures and add the hdd I want to use mostly 7200rpm hdd's.

Going by my memory a hard drive can't saturate the speeds of USB 2.0 let along USB 3.0.
The read/wright speed of hard drives is to slow.
I did a lot of research long time ago, when I was thinking on buying my first SSD.
I just don't remember where I found all the data from my research.

I gave all but one of my hard drives away a long time ago, after getting hooked on SSD's.

USB 3.0 cables have extra wires & they are designed to carry extra current as well. This website might help explain it.
