Need USB 3.1

Hi all I got a USB Samsung D3 2TB external drive plugged into a USB 3 3.0 port ...... its now telling me on start up it could work faster on a newer USB 3.1 port, I have a free PCI Express 2.0 XT Slot, left on my Asus Maximus Vl Formula Main board, also on this board sure I noticed USB 3 plug to add front slot USB 3, but not sure if they would be 3.0 or 3.1 ?

so my question is what's my best options to get USB 3.1 ..... any help advise welcome

after much research here I got a PCI-E USB 3.1 Gen II (10 Gbps) card ..... be careful because u can get 3.1 gen II cards that are only (5 Gbps) ....... plus a lot of other misleading type-c type ports plus type-a

hopefully I got the right one not got yet will let u know

USB 2.0 has a 480 M bits per second transfer rate, or 60 M Bytes per second transfer rate. I'm confident to say that the transfer rates you're going to achieve aren't related to the USB port but to the media you're using. I have a HDD USB 3.0 dock with a SATA HDD. It begins with 220 b/s transfer rate (to disk ram cache) and slows down and stabilize at 35 b/s. The results are the same if I use USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port. The bottle neck isn't the USB. The The bottle neck is the device (SATA HDD).

im probably wrong, but not had time to understand what u saying ....... but my USB card is connected to my MB by a PCI-E card not sure what u saying ...... plus it not turned up yet cant test

As Z3r10 mentioned on post #15, It doesn't matter if you connect your external HDD to USB 2.0, 3.0, or 3.1.
USB 2.0 has a 480 M bits per second transfer rate
USB 3.0 has a 5 G bits per second transfer rate
USB 3.1 has a 10 G bits per second transfer rate

I would say that your external HDD won't achieve 300 M bits per second transfer rate.
So the results will be the same if you use USB 2.0, 3.0 or USB 3.1 port. The bottle neck isn't the USB. The The bottle neck is the device (SATA HDD).
