I have an older HP desktop that I've upgraded the parts over time. I want to replace the motherboard and processor and get a new video card as well but the video card can come later.

I want to do this as inexpensive as possible I know it's going to be a tedious job. I need to know what parts I absolutely have to replace other than the motherboard and processor and what parts I can reuse.

I know sometimes it's easier and cheaper to just buy a new computer but I feel like I could fix this up decently just for me.

I can give basic specs or if there is something I can run and copy/past the info let me know.

Windows 7 64-bit, 8GB memory, 1TB Hard Drive, Nvidia Geforce GT 520 2 GB deadicated. I upgraded my power supply recently as well. Current motherboard Asus IPIBL-LB Benicia-GL8E

I also have "some" dxdiag info.

Christina well for ne ting you are going to have to buy another Windoews 7 OEM as the current motherboard has the current OS tied to it unless you phone Microsoft and tell them the mobo has gone bad and can you transfer the OEM to the new board.
The best way of doing this is this
CleanReinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 - you must use the correct version so if you had Home Premiumon it you must pick the ISO for it and you just activate by using the code thatis on the sticker under the machine. (Don't forget to pick the right languagetoo)
The best bit about this method is that you get rid of all the bloatware thatHP (or any brand) put on their machines as a matter of course.

Now don't forget that the PSU is also going to be old so you can check out how good the volts are with HW Info HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download see pic

Ok no worries but do check the PSU it would be a shame to see you put a bit into the new build and find it has got a bit on the old side or will now have enough power for what you want the machine for.

Sorry just noticed the PSU was recently renewed but check the output anyway.

Thank you.

I mainly need to know if I can reuse things like memory, cords/cables, power source, harddrive etc. etc.

I'm willing to buy for now the motherboard processor and of course operating system. Later would love to get a new video card.

I'm new at this and have only replaced things here and there and have never done a major rebuild or anything.

At a guess I would think looking at the CPU you have the RAM is probably DDR2 so it will need to be replaced with DDR3. Hard drives well a matter of choice but the thing to do at the moment is to get a SSD for the OS and boot (doesn't need to be huge) and a second larger spinner for putting data on - much more speed that way. Of course the mother board and CPU are your main concerns really as they will dictate what they are compatible with.
I would look at what the use of the machine is going to be before deciding on brands for the CPU as Intel have become very expensive for processors and subsequently the range of boards they fit.
I am looking at using an AMD processor this time for a build I am doing for my partner and she uses a machine just for general use (Google, emails, facelessbook:() and the graphics I think are these days quite ok with AMD - Intel I am not so sure now.
In any case this is a good ref for when you have things set up and running

How can I see if my ram is DDR2 or DDR3 just for curiosity.

Do you think you could suggest an inexpensive setup for me? I like gaming. I have played Everquest II, Secondlife, Sims 2 & 3 (possibly 4 in the fall), Runes of Magic. etc. etc. I have also been accepted to beta test Elder Scrolls online and Everquest Next Landmark.
Everquest Next Landmark is the one giving me trouble at the moment my graphics card isn't strong enough to handle it. I don't want to drop more money on a graphics card right now though because other things like motherboard and processor are severely outdated considering.

Summerbear:

It's a near certainty that you have DDR2 memory on that HP PC.

You can download a free program called Belarc that will give much more detail on your hardware and software here:

Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit, for software, hardware and security configuration information on your computer. Software license management, IT asset management, cyber security audits, and more.

Do that and confirm it's DDR 2.

What brand, model, and power rating is your recently purchased power supply?

There is some small chance the HP case you have is non-standard in some way, but the fact that you were able to install a presumably standard ATX power supply into it is a good sign.

You might be able to look in the original documentation that came with your PC to confirm it's a standard ATX case. Or maybe from HP web site.

If the case is OK and the new power supply isn't totally bogus, you likely can get by with new motherboard, CPU, and RAM. And possibly a video card if your gaming requirements are too much for any built-in graphics found on the CPU.

You need to confirm that your hard drive and DVD drive are SATA, not IDE; I did a quick search and it appears that they are.

Give us some idea of your top dollar budget and where you might buy the parts: USA? Amazon? Newegg?

I will be able to give more specific information later. As for the power source it's an ATC-TP650-PM I think it's a 650 Watt. It fit fine to my knowledge. (put in awhile ago and don't remember off hand having problems)

Newegg is fine for me I trust them and have ordered from them before. I don't think I have IDE because whatever Cables came with the power source is what I have all threw the computer. I've also replaced the hard drive before to a 1TB. I also replaced that video card and that's why I'm not to concerned right now with replacing it I rather get the other major components first and I'll replace the video card at another time.

Do you think you can give me a round about price?

That's an Antec True Power PSU; pretty good unit; should be fine for any single graphics card you care to use.

Run that Belarc app.

Budget number needed. How much are you willing to spend for these 3 parts: motherboard, RAM, CPU?

Very roughly: motherboard 150, possibly less; 8 GB RAM 75; mid level Intel i5 CPU 200;

That's 425, but could be cut by 100 if too extravagant.

Here's a list of 13 suitable motherboards from Newegg. These are all for the latest Intel CPU generation and are from 3 respected companies: Gigabyte, Asus, and Asrock.

Most are under 100; so likely won't have to spend 150 for a motherboard.

They vary slightly in features and maybe in warranty. Look them over.

These all have H87 chipset which is all you would need unless you intend to overclock your CPU.

Do you have any overclocking intentions?

Also do you need the computer model number to see if I have a good sized case? It's a pretty large size imo.

And how do I post the results of the Belarc scan when the results are html stored on the computer?

You don't have to post all of the Belarc results.

See if you can find the RAM section and confirm that it says DDR2 rather than DDR3.

Yeah, give us the HP model number if possible. It's almost certainly an ATX case, but it's worth a check.

If you want, you can post an edited text version of the Belarc, showing stuff like RAM type, motherboard make and model, hard drive make, size, and model, DVD drive make and model, etc. But most of the Belarc stuff is not important for this thread. Just see if you can copy the most important tidbits to a text file and then paste the tidbits here.

There's a way to upload a file into this thread, but I wouldn't think it's necessary.

I went to Newegg last night and did some pricing for you that I can relay later in this thread.

Another question if I decided to just upgrade the processor to something bigger. Could I do that with my current motherboard and how much would that be? I would like to get the best processor I can for the motherboard I have but again something reasonably priced if possible. Then maybe I could save the processor back for when I eventually upgrade the motherboard that way I can reuse it perhaps?

Thank you for helping me also if I haven't said it I appreciate this.

EDIT: In case you forgot current motherboard is ASUS IPIBL-LB Benicia-GL8E

Here is your motherboard at HP site; it uses DDR 2.

Motherboard Specifications, IPIBL-LB (Benicia) | HP® Support

It's a socket 775 motherboard; several generations old.

Look through the above link and it will tell you what processors you could upgrade to if you want to keep that motherboard.

The most powerful one would be an Intel Quad Core 9 series.

I wouldn't do it unless I had severe budget limitations. Newer generations are much faster.

You need to pause and decide on a budget before going a step farther.

If you want to go with newer stuff, you need to spend at least 350, preferably 450, for new parts.

Make that decision before doing anything else.

If you can't afford to change motherboards, you need to find a processor that will fit in the existing motherboard. They are not being manufactured anymore as far as I know, so you will have to buy used.

Here's a link to used processors on ebay; most of these would be compatible:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trk...kw=intel+quad+core+775&_sacat=58058&_from=R40

Your current CPU is a quad core Q6700 that scores around 3000 on the Passmark benchmark.

A strong CPU that you could use is the Q9650 that scores 4244 on that benchmark.

To give you a comparison to benchmarks of more recent CPUs that would require a new motherboard and RAM:

Intel i3-4340: 5161

Intel i5-4570: 7083

Intel i7-4770: 9949

Intel i5-2500: 6218; this is what I have; it's over 3 years old.

That used processor would be usable ONLY on a socket 775 motherboard. More recent processors require socket 1150 or socket 1155 motherboards.

What's your decision?

Ya I should just go ahead and spend $500 and upgrade the parts. Better than spending $1,200 on a new computer that only going to last a couple years lol.

If you can afford 500, here is what I'd get:

Intel i5-4670 processor; 205 to 220

Motherboard: one of those from above list of 13; say 110

RAM: 8 GB of GSkill DDR 3; 75

That's about 400.

Add an SSD (solid state drive). Put Windows and all of your applications on it. Put all of your data (mp3s, video, Word documents, etc) on your existing hard drive. A good 120 GB SSD can be had for under $100.

Does that suit your budget and general plan?

You of course would have to buy a new copy of Windows, which I think you had already planned on.

it really all depends on how much you are willing to spend and what budget you have to work with. Obviously; the more you can afford to spend the better the quality(generally speaking but not always) you are gonna get.
