Neighbours can see pc and internet contents with network discovery off

I would look for holes in the walls if they are seeing what you are doing :o.
Set your pc up with a strong password, this will stop most people from being able to remote into your pc, then setup your router to use the mac table and allow computers to access the router by thier mac, this way you can control which computers are allowed to access your network.
To find your pc mac open a command prompt (type cmd in search and run as admin) and then type ipconfig /all and enter, you will see a bunch of stuff listed, look for the "Physical Address" entry and you will see 6 set (12 numbers/letters; 00-B2-34-4C-DF-1A for example), this is your mac affress and what you will want to put into your routers mac table.

serpentracer is correct

it's not a windows issue. without any kind of security settings (wep, wpa, wpa2, etc etc.)
you're letting anyone with a wireless adapter use your internet and browse your computer.
set up a wpa-2 passkey in your router asap. or just keep letting everyone with computer have at your internet and computer....

Configuring Wireless Security

Set your pc up with a strong password, this will stop most people from being able to remote into your pc, then setup your router to use the mac table and allow computers to access the router by thier mac, this way you can control which computers are allowed to access your network.
To find your pc mac open a command prompt (type cmd in search and run as admin) and then type ipconfig /all and enter, you will see a bunch of stuff listed, look for the "Physical Address" entry and you will see 6 set (12 numbers/letters; 00-B2-34-4C-DF-1A for example), this is your mac affress and what you will want to put into your routers mac table.

If you are really worried:

  • Change your SSID (and passphrase).
  • Hide your SSID (not much use, as the SSID can be discovered by packet sniffing).
  • Use MAC filtering (not much use, as the MAC address can be discovered by packet sniffing and then "spoofed").
  • Use WPA2 security (serpentracer is correct. This is currently the best option).
:( SSID hiding and MAC filtering are only useful against people with feeble hacking skills. :(

thanks guys, at the moment i am using the virgin super hub, the security settings are set to WPA Auto for the wireless settings so i will look into changing that, have changed the SSID and phasphrase always using upper and lower plus numbers. The problem is i never learned really how to use a computer or set one up just tried to guess it, so the blind has led the blind to this problem. You guys rock and Merry Christmas to you all have a good new year too :)

thank you Dwarf looks like i have fixed my pc problems then, before there was more than 1 set of the numbers you had described yet only 1 account set up on the pc, the problem was not network related via wpa is was when i was reinstalling my pc and remote desktop control settings was enabled for my pc to be controlled remotely i did not disable them then restart immediately and somehow my pc was being hacked by my neighbours. Cheers my man im a happy boy :) btw i noticed that the more than 1 number was on my desktop and my laptop, it was a similar number with 1001 at the end, also used the disable the built in admin just to make sure it was secure via cmd and net user admin/active:no after restarting and disabling remote services. I understand its disabled by default but better safe than sorry.
If the allow my pc to be controlled remotely and the remote asisstance tab is ticked is it possible for the pc to be hacked ?

After posting this thread its kind of comfirmed that you dont need to do anything to windows 7 for it to be setup securely right?
http://www.sevenforums.com/installa...-else-do-you-need-do-new-installation-pc.html

Bur if there was another account number and i did not create it how on earth did it get there in the first place if its secure and using recommended settings?

Maybe i should let this post go now it seems as though it is fixed but as typical humans we all have a thirst to understand why and how and if from this post i can help other people then it has been a worthy lenghty cause :)

I agree!

Just to clarify, Is this a normal house, or are you in Uni halls or something?

You can set mac address filtering on your router which will ensure only network cards you want on your netork will be DHCP'd...?

Also you can switch your router to not broadcast ssid (change it first to something else!) then if they search for networks it wont show up...

problem is bob when they are hacking my pc i have not even installed the lan drivers or connected it to the internet, plus i am checking the MAC codes on the router status and i cant see a new device or an irregular mac that i dont recognise on my network, its something else they are doing whilst i customise and install the drivers but they could not do it this time when i restarted my pc directly after disabling remote settings and services plus built in admin, its in my home too not networking sharing either

Apologies just read pg3 and realised I repeated what's already been said...

I personally think its highly highly unlikely that your neighbours are actually able to access your pc, unless you have some crazy blackhat living next door!

Personally I'd go and knock on their door and ask them to satisfy my curiousity :-)!

the windows firewall is a waste of resources too.

If you have the knowledge/skills required to set up a router firewall correctly, that might be true.
I wouldn't advise "average" users (no offence intended) to turn off their firewalls.

Routers and modems are going to come with generic settings (i.e. access permissions).
They have to work "straight out of the box" (i.e. be easy for unskilled users to operate).

The firewall on a Windows PC will tailor itself, based on the software you have installed.

You should also change, the username and password on your router, for the same reason (generic settings).

Most of them will be set to something like:

  • username: admin
  • password: admin

See this article about malware:
If your PC picks up a virus, whose fault is it? | ZDNet
The test involved more than 640 hosts running Windows XP Professional with no third-party applications and with auto-updating disabled. With the Windows firewall turned off, the mean time before a host was compromised was just over 18 hours, with the Conficker worm doing more than its fair share of damage.

...

But once a firewall was turned on—the default configuration for every Windows system shipped in the past seven years—the numbers changed dramatically:
With the firewall enabled, the mean survival time of the Windows XP SP2 systems increased to 336 days. No system with this control enabled was compromised in less than 108 days.
...

That study covered Windows XP, but the report notes that the conclusions should apply to Windows Vista and Windows 7 equally well.

OK folks i know the router i am using is the virgin super hub and the wirless security is set up as WPA auto, i will go home tonight and change it to only WPA2 as clearly my network is not setup securely after reading the WPA artcile you have supplied, thank you. I have however still noticed more than 1 SID number on my laptop with only 1 account setup which i still find strange but i will do my best, i think the firewall options on this router are only on or off no other options, i have installed zonealarm pro firewall and i will create a long password that is random diasble wifi protect setup and see what happens. Lol i know this has been long and painfull but fingers crossed this could be the light at the end of the tunnel :P

love my gaming but a noob to setting a pc up properly lol
Ok i think this can be closed now it was set to WPA auto but when i went on last night to change the settings it was WEP TKIP which i did not choose so i changed the access password the SSID name and the Passkey and what do you know as soon as i turned off my wireless i could hear my neighbours talking about what was going on and i think its fair to say now its secure used a 20 digit passkey took it off WPA auto and on WPA2 AES PSK, disabled pin access so the only way is wifi protected setup by pressing the button or the pass phrase key.

Thank you everyone for your help, i now see the error of my ways and will not do it again is it possible to leave a donation for your efforts helping me?

Thanks for letting us know that finally you have chosen and secured your network with WPA2.
