Network Connection Status Window

Hi all,
When you open the network connection status window it shows amongst other things the number of bytes sent and received for the session.
Is there some computer wizz out there who can tell me how accurate these figures are? Anyone with some insider knowledge?

They are accurate. Windows counts all ingoing and outgoing traffic. Why do you ask?

I am asking because my ISP says that it is not accurate and cannot be relied upon even for a rough estimate. I have checked it against my router's readings and they match perfectly. I don't believe the ISP.

Any traffic that originates from the PC or goes to the PC will be calculated correctly.

Do you know of any Microsoft site that states that. It would really help if I had something definitive.

Are you attempting to dispute charges with your ISP? I will look it up, but I know for a fact that Windows accurately and effectively counts packets and sizes that are sent and received from the computer. If your router matches, that should be enough evidence.

Your ISP is full of crap. Tell them to provide evidence and proof that Windows and your router do not accurately track data packets.

Yes I am attempting to dispute charges. The ISP says that any method of determining usage except for theirs is wrong and is unacceptable to them. I suspect that Windows is very accurate but I need something to that effect from say a Microsoft page to back it up.
Perhaps you could point me in the right direction?

Your right - they are full of crap. Actually, that is not a bad idea of yours to get them to disprove the accuracy of the Network Connection Status counter. Why should I have to prove it accurate when they are saying it is inaccurate. Especially as it perfectly matches the router figures.

Exactly. And honestly, send MS an email, and they should be able to help out.

Good idea -- I would love to send MS an email but I can't find a support email address. As you windows is an OEM version MS want to charge for any sort of personal support. Please let me know if you know of an MS email address where I could get free support.

There is a place called justanswers.com which supposedly provide verified experts but they also charge -- although it seems to be a reasonable charge. They might be my last resort.

Thanks for your help and ideas.

Microsoft Contact Us

;)

Since yours is a general inquiry, I would use the first email. This way you do not incur charges from MS. Explain your situation, and they should be helpful. They have usually been for me.
