Network Service List does not turn on

Hello everyone

When I click on "Network and Internet" option in Control Panel, I don't see the network I am connected to. (i.e. The computer icon, then the network icon and the Internet with the world icon.)

All I can see is "unknown" and below that in blue letters more info. When I click on "more info" the following message pops out:

"Do you want to turn on Network List Service?"

and the message is followed by information on what this service does.

When I click "turn on" nothing happens:( but the Internet works fine.

I googled that and found only one solution but that didn't work for me.

This is the solution I tried with no luck: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-networking/network-list-service-will-not-turn-on/fbbda2cc-1609-4628-a21b-b77c180c148b

Can somebody please help me? Any suggestions please?

Many thanks

Hi goude, welcome to 7F :)

When it is asking you:
"Do you want to turn on Network List Service?"
It is referring to the Service in Services Follow the tutorial, and find the Network List Service.

Mine is set to Started - Manual, the tutorial will show you how to change it if yours is different.

There seems to be a problem with your link, my FF can not find the location.

Hi

The link below should now work I hope.

Network List Service will not turn on - Microsoft Answers

My "Network Service List" service was set to manual and I changed that to automatic but it didn't make any difference. I have changed it back to manual now and restarted the service but the problem persists.

Since you know how to arrive at the Network Service List entry (NSL), and change its properties, did you check the Dependencies for it under the Dependencies Tab?

You will have to manually check all of them.
The preferred settings can be found here: Black Viper’s Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Service Configurations | Black Viper's Website | www.blackviper.com

Have you tried tomchen 1989's solution at the bottom of your link?
You may have to do this with all the services involved.

The dcomcnfg service is listed as a dependency of the NSL.

No I didn't check any NSL dependencies, I just followed the instructions of that link.

Yes I tried tomchen 1989's solution with no luck but I haven't tried it with all the other services.

I will do that and post back.

Hi Anak

I checked all the dependecies of NSL and I matched their settings according to the ones in your link.
Restarted the computer but nothing happened.

I am trying to apply tomchen 1989's solution to all NSL dependencies but I can not find them in "DCOM Config".
For example, service NlaSvc with display name: "Network Location Awareness" is not in DCOM Config folder.
The same RpcSs (Remote Procedure Call).

Should they be in "DCOM Config"? Where can I find them?:sarc:

Thank you

Hi

I just realised that my laptop is 64bit, so I looked inside the SysWOW64 directory but I can not see the NSL dependant services in there. What am I doing wrong?:o

Many thanks

I am looking for
NlaSvc
(Network Location Awareness) and RpcSs (Remote Procedure Call)

I found nlasvc.dll.mui which is inside C:/Windows/SysWOW64/en-US and also
nlasvc.mof inside C:/Windows/SysWOW64/wbem. I couldn't find RpcSs.

These are not what I am looking for, are they? They should be .dll files, right?

However I did found nlasvc.dll and rpcss.dll inside the system32 directory. Should I apply tomchen's solution to these files?http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/profile/37f8b205-9d5f-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5

Nothing. They just do not belong in there.

I am looking for
NlaSvc
(Network Location Awareness) and RpcSs (Remote Procedure Call)

I found nlasvc.dll.mui which is inside C:/Windows/SysWOW64/en-US and also
nlasvc.mof inside C:/Windows/SysWOW64/wbem. I couldn't find RpcSs.

Right. Change them as a last resort.

For clarity of the File extensions:
nlasvc.dll.mui: MUI File Extension - Open .MUI files
nlasvc.mof:MOF File Extension - Open .MOF files

However I did found nlasvc.dll and rpcss.dll inside the system32 directory. Should I apply tomchen's solution to these files?
Yes.
If the Service still will not start there is the possibility that the .dll files need to be re-registered because of corruption, but you will un-register them first.

Open an Elevated CMD Prompt Then type in:
regsvr32 /u nlasvc.dll
regsvr32 /u rpcss.dll
The /u stands for un-register.

Then:
regsvr32 nlasvc.dll
regsvr32 rpcss.dll

If you see an error such as: nlasvc.dll / rpcss.dll was loaded, but the dllregistaryserver entry point was not found.

It means that not all .dll files contain information that needs to be entered into the registry.
If you see the above error, the .dll file does not need to registered in order to be used by the OS or application.
The error message is telling you “you tried to register a dll file but is does not contain any information that has to be in the registry”.

All you need to do is to close out the CMD prompt.

If still no go after all of this please run System File Checker at least three times.

goude,
I am beginning to enter into a grey area in trying to help you because of the Security, and Launch and Activition Permissions as my Edition of 7 is Home Premium, and it is limited in what it can do in those areas. :(

You do not specify what Edition you have, but if you are preforming tomchen's solution I would believe your Edition is higher than Home Premium.

OK now a different problem came up.

My Windows 7 Edition is Home Premium as well.

I tried to apply tomchen's solution to these services but it will not let me do that.
I tried to add the "Local Service" as I did with NSL but for NlaSvc and RpcSs the add option is greyed out.
rolleyes.gif

I can confirm that my account has administrative privileges.
Here is what I do:Inside windows system32 directory, right-click on nlasvc service, then properties, security tab.In security tab under Group or usernames I can see SYSTEM, Administrators (Goude\Administrators), Users (Goude-PC/Users) and TrustedInstaller

Then I go to Edit in order to add the "local service" like I did with NSL(tomchen's solution)
but the add option together with the remove option are greyed out.

I googled that and I found this: https://lbis.kenyon.edu/helpline/networksecurityandfilesharing/settingaccesspermissions

In this link it says: If you notice that the permissions checkmarks for the user are greyed out, you must do the following to be able to change their permissions:
  • Highlight the desired username in the list in top half of window and click the Advanced tab.
  • Uncheck the box to left of Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child object, which appears near bottom of window. Click OK.
  • Click the Copy button and then OK. This should change the greyed-out checkmarks to black so that you can change the permissions for that user.
My "Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child object" box is already unchecked and is also greyed out.:zip:

Any more suggestions please?

My Apologies, but I am tapped out..

I have been trying to find the link for a third-party Group Policy editor in my chest O' marks that was offered by one of the members here, but I am not having any luck so far. All that GPEdit is, is a GUI front end to the Registry.

I do not know if this will be helpful until I can find that link, but if you would like to try and modify the registry manually this download will guide you on what the policy settings should be, and then you can modify them to your liking.
Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - Group Policy Settings Reference for Windows and Windows Server

Do not forget to backup your registry!
