Network Sharing with XP, Vista and 7?

No, neither can connect to it.
Both computers have NO driver for it presently.

Edit: Vista is prompting for driver install; 7 returned 0x0000000d.

Vista still won't be able to get the printer to work with the XP driver that will be installed - 7 isn't asking for one, so no idea how to make it work without physically connecting the printer and bypassing the networked printer altogether. >_<

have you tried downloading the most current driver for the printer on the XP machine itself

I am certain it is up to date, but I will go ahead and check on that now.

install the driver for vista on the vista machine and like wise for 7

Alright, I'll try. XP is still searching for the driver...

XP did in fact find another driver, so I installed and restarted all three machines.

Vista installed a driver, but I am certain it was the XP driver and now says "Windows cannot connect to the printer. The local print spooler service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine" - which the machine has already been restarted.

I'll try installing the Vista 32 driver on the Vista 32 and the Vista 64 driver on the 7 64 now and see if this changes...

go right to dell website and get the most current drivers don't rely on windows update

Okay, both of the driver installers are asking me what the "appropriate install" is the options are:

"Personal Installation" - Install the printer for use on this computer. OR "Network Installation" - Install the printer for use on a network.

Which one should I pick for what I'm trying to do? I'm leaning towards "Network"...

Okay, now they are both asking me to "select the printer you would like to install and click next" but it is not tuning up. It says: "if your printer is not shown, make sure your printer is on" - it is - ", connected" - it's not on these machines -"and click refresh". Should I physically hook the printer up to the portables now?

Or, should I choose "Manual Add" which is: "If you want to setup printer sharing with peer-to-peer"...

just from the network icon on your desktop see if you can connect to the XP machine and reveal the shared printer and try to connect

No, neither can connect.

The Installer tacked onto the printer drivers on both machines didn't finish and wants me to select either of the two options given to do it, but I don't know if I need to physically hook the printer up to them in order to do this, or choose the manual add for it to work with the network.

you could go ahead and try a direct connection from printer to get the drivers installed

I choose "Manual Add" and it came up with "The printer is connected to another computer and shared with other computers on the network. (Peer-to-Peer client)... trying that one now.

It is asking me for the "Remote Computer's Name" and the "Shared Printer's" Name...

Waiting for it to do something...

Vista install failed, 7 install succeeded and neither can communicate.

So, do I have to hack the registry on both of them to make the spooler work?

try turning on the guest account on XP machine
