Networks a Media Device with Windows 7

Another bit of info from Mediagate:
Mediagate & Windows7
Q: Is Microsoft Windows 7 operating System supported on Mediagate Players? , if not ,
is there any workaround to make it work?
A: At this time, Windows 7 is NOT supported on any of the Medigate players.
This is for technical reasons (Microsoft has changed the way it deals with Samba shares).

Wait... are you saying that the Mediagate device is on the WAN side of Belkin?

Teddals, is this diagram correct? If not, please correct it for me:

Code:
PC (Win7)(10.1.1.3) ---|
----- (LAN, 4 ports) Belkin (WAN side, to your broadband connection) ---- Internet
Mediagate(10.1.1.10) ---|

If this diagram is correct, you need to triple check the cabling from PC to Belkin, and Mediagate to Belkin, make sure those cables are OK, and the NIC indicator on both PC and Mediagate is blinking (showing that it is connected).

Hey, am I missing something here?

The Mediagate device is on the same network as the Win7 PC, unless the network cable connecting Mediagate to Win7 is busted, it should PING no matter what... I assume the Mediagate device is connected on the LAN interface of Belkin router, right?

There's no need to put "Default Gateway" or "Gateway" on anything unless you want the said device to connect to the Interweb, applying IP address with same network address should suffice.

zzz2496

As I have mentioned it is connected to the router via a CAT5 LAN cable to a LAN interface port.

It has 4 LAN Ports.
There is nothing wrong with the connection set as I have just checked with my other partioned operating system (WinXP 64-bit) & everything works find on this operating system.
It is only when I switch over to the Win7 64-bit system the the network to the Mediagate doesn't work.
When I start up the Mediagate on the Network Mode it sees the the PC (Master) but wheni go to open Master to see my shared hard drives the Medigate tell me there is no shared files to view.

acurasd,

Firewall has nothing to do with anything. Teddals stated that the device can see Win7 PC, but see no shares..
IF it is indeed firewall, the device will not see ANYTHING.

Teddals,

Hold on, re-reading the userguide... SMB implementation in Win7 might change a bit, but it should not be that significant.

I have done it through Norton 360 and Internet Security and if i just put "use network trust" it will see it but it won't let me through to the computers.. until i put full trust on them.

Hi again,
I have found some info for using Virtual XP as a work around but the info is vague in the setup.
What it says is:
Download "Virtual XP for Windows 7" - Its a Free download from Microsoft for windows 7 Users.
Once you have installed Windows XP Mode, click the Windows 7 Start button , then select All Programs >
Windows Virtual PC > Windows XP Mode to begin setup.
3) You may have to configure Virtual XP to use your REAL network card , as opposed to a virtual one
(So Virtual XP can pull a IP from Win 7).These settings can be found in >preferences>extras
4) Create a folder within Virtual XP and share it out in the normal way.
5) re-boot both MG and PC and your MG should be able to find the share as it normally would.

I have managed to get the Mediagate to see the shared folder I have created in VirtualXP but still cannot get it to see my shared hard drives in Win7.
I seems the only way I can view my media files is to copy them into the shared folder which
means doubling up on hard drive space which is one thing I want to avoid.
Is there any way I can get my hard drives to share in virtualXP?
when you look at their properties in VirtualXP there is no option to share.

Teddals, can you explain the steps you've taken when you troubleshoot Windows 7 -> Mediagate? I see that Mediagate uses "Guest" account to access your shares, so I suppose you need to activate the "Guest" account and let the "Guest" account access your shares over network.

What I have done is when I start Virtual XP the mediaGate then sees as well as Master (PC) it also now sees
The Guest Account & when I now open that account the mediagate now sees the shared folder that I created in VirtualXP. It still cannot see any shared folds when it goes to open Master.
What I have done in VirtualXP to get this to work is to configer the IP address by setting it up to use the real network card in my PC within VirtualXP.
I set the TCP/IP to be detected automatically & as soon as I did that & restarted VirtualXP & the Mediagate
the second account appeared on the TV screen.

No no no...

I meant the steps you've taken to solve Windows 7 -> Mediagate, Virtual XP will behave just like ordinary XP. You need to keep in mind that Virtual XP is like a whole different computer altogether, it just resides in your Windows, so you don't need a separate "real" computer to run XP. You can't "share" the XP in hope that "Master" will get shared automatically... For now, forget Virtual XP, as you said earlier (and it is true), you'll have to copy all data you want to share to Mediagate, effectively doubling the disk usage...

Okay.
My Pc is called 'Master'
All I have done in Win7 is setup all my media hard drives to share through the share properties option.
All the network settings are as I've previously posted - the TCP/IP setup to autmatically detect.
That's it.
There is something within the Win7 program (& it's not the firewall) which is preventing the mediagate
from viewing the shared hard drives on Master.

I see,

Here's what you can try:

1. Enable the built-in Guest account.
2. Change the ACL of your shared folders to include the built-in Guest account (right click the folder you shared, click properties, go to the Security Tab, add "Guest" in that list, enable ONLY READ for Guest).
3. Test it, see if it works...
