When I go to Control panel > Windows update > Change settings
Under 'Important Updates' drop down 'Never check for updates (Not recommended)' item is MISSING.

I completely know how important it is to keep the Windows update turned ON, yet I prefer to TURN OFF Windows update for a specific work reason.

I checked Google, youtube, several forums including this forum thoroughly but couldn't find a solution.

Please help me in knowing how I could add 'Never check for updates (Not recommended)' item to the drop down.

Please help!!

Hmmm - not a problem I'm familiar with!
Let's go to basics......
Do you have, or have you ever had, a 'Registry 'Cleaner'/Optimizer/blahblah' installed?

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the ElevatedCommand Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, pressEnter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive,so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possiblyafter a second auto-reboot) -

then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker -Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the ElevatedCommand Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages -and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created(C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate itdirectly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Publicfolder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messagesencountered.

This post seems to indicate that Kaspersky can cause that option to go away:
No "never check for updates (not recommended)" option - Microsoft Community

I could not replicate the issue using KIS2013 or KIS2014 or by manually adding the info to the registry that the link above mentioned. Perhaps it takes a combination of things before the option goes away.

KIS2014 scan checked these update related keys/values:

KIS2014 found no issues and changed no settings. Windows Update was set to never check at the time of the scan. I would have expected a warning about that.

KIS has been known to cause some issues but yhey are rare.
As it's otherwise a very good AV I'm reluctant to suggest uninstalling it.

@OP,
Wait for NoelDP to direct you. This is just a comment. I'm not suggesting that you rollback anything just yet.

@NoelDP,
If KIS listed an issue with Windows Update, then KIS should be able to rollback what it changed.

I agree with you all that KIS is really a friendly AV. Does good job.

Do you have, or have you ever had, a 'Registry 'Cleaner'/Optimizer/blahblah' installed?
No I have never installed any such software.

@NoelDP
I am gathering the data you asked. I will shortly upload it for you as per the instructions. :)
