New build BSOD 0x0000124 Blue screen crash - DM log uploaded!

Further Update - It's just crashed running the installation disk! Decided to bite the bullet and carry out a fresh install on what is currently my XP based drive as I've copied all the info across so can flatten that drive.

Got as far as the options to format the drive (only this drive is hooked up) and it's blue screened with the same 0x124 error!

This was about my last hope to get this thing to run 7!! I've disconnected every piece of hardware at some point!! Could thi indicate either motherboard or CPU?? But again, why does it run XP perfectly stable??

Paul, I am almost baffled about this one. I have no idea why it can run XP but mot 7. Windows 7 is a much more advanced and resource friendly OS than any other created before. lease look and tell me if you ran the memtest86+ downloaded from this site Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool. Also where did you get the OS disk? What store or web site did you download it from? Where did you purchase it?

I ran the memtest a couple of nights back and it showed no errors after 8 passes. I downloaded the installation disc as I just had an unregistered key. I think it was from the Microsoft site - it;s the pro version of 7 with sp1. I could try to download it again - is there another place I could try?

I have read the thread again and it is confusing.
Do us that are watching a favor.

If you can fill in your complete System Specs as they are at this time.
I'm lost on the video card, power supply and hard drive.
Is your GTS 450 installed at this time?

This is very important. From post # 82

Also where did you get the OS disk? What store or web site did you download it from? Where did you purchase it?
What Windows 7 do you have a COA for?
What Windows 7 are you trying to install?
Are you over clocked at this time?
Make sure you let us know exactly how MemTest86 + turns out.

Note: Paul and I posted at the same time.

Some suggestions until your problem is fixed.
Turn off hibernation and sleep.
Remove Asus A.I. Suit completely.
Remove all unnecessary things from the computer. Drives, usb connected things ect.
Keep one known good hard drive hooked up for the instillation of Windows 7.
--------------------------
At one time you posted you installed Windows 7 and installed all updates. I presume there was no BSOD when doing that.
Is that correct?
What was your hardware at that time?

Thanks - in answer:

The card is not installed
Both hard drives are Samsung Spinpoint F3 720rpm 1TB
PSU is an Alpine 600w
Memory is 8gb DDR3 133 (4x2gb)

The COA is for Windows 7 professional SP1 - it installed fine initially, problems began a couple if days later

The system is standard, not overclocked and has the latest BIOS. Mem test was clear after 8 passes

Hope this helps and thanks again for your continue assistance guys!

Update - yes when I first installed all was fine and this was on a new Samsung spinpoint - no other drive was connected, other than that it was the same hardware.

You can download from here Windows 7 Direct Download Links, Official Disk Images from Digital River
Here is a tutorial to do a clean install of Windows 7. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html I would recommend at step 8 read the yellow box. But I would delete any existing partition and create a new one of the whole disk and format it. Then install Windows. That will give you a clean install. Be sure you boot from the CD or DVD you make from the ISO file.

Great thanks - I willl download and try that disc for a clean installation on the current XP drive

Jack, I am almost positive, he is not overclocked, he has replaced his PSU, he has run memtest86+ for 8 or 9 passes with 0 errors. He has run Seatools on his hard drives, But keeps crashing and the dump files show nothing. If this install of Windows does not work, I am going to get him to download and run a Live Linux CD. That will take the hard drives and drivers out of the picture. He will be running straight from ram. If he crashes then, it will almost have to be a Motherboard problem as everything else has passed or been replaced. I checked the link he gave and those ISO files of windows he downloaded are from Digital River and as good as there is. The only other possibility I can see is a bad download or burn to disk.

I have a problem with you choice of power supply.
I can't find any reliable web site that their is a review.
That is not a good sign of quality.
I know of no good $25.00 power supplies.

In my opinion until a know quality power supply is installed nothing will work correctly in any constant manner. Readings, test and BSOD can all be effected or give false readings by less than a quality power supply. It's like the tail chasing the dog.
Bios voltages is measured when the system is doing the least amount of work when turned on.
I have never had the voltages in bios and the programs you use be that much different with a quality power supply. The power supply is the roots of the computer tree and must not be skimped on.
Take your XP hat off and put on your Windows 7 hat.
That being said let us know how your install goes with Windows 7.

Was your video card installed at that time?

It worked once so if the same hardware plus the new power supply the install should work fine if the Tutorial is followed.

I would recommend if the install goes well with all updates and activation to install MSE. Then use the computer a few days before installing anything.
Then install things one at a time looking for any problems that might happen.

Steve I like you Live Linux CD idea.
A crazy motherboard is almost impossible to troubleshoot other than eliminating other things but a motherboard also needs a quality power supply.
As always; their may be more than one problem.

I will go back to watching.

When you do the install, make sure only the hard drive you want Windows installed on is connected and connect it to port 0 on your motherboard. Deleting the partition and creating a new one and formatting that should remove any obstacle that may remain on the drive.

Looking back the more recent problems began after a power cut. Could've damaged the PSU as it was all good until then. Wonder if I can get my money back in the one I've just bought!

A quality power supply would not get hurt if their is a power outage.
Do you use a surge protector? If not, why not.

Your drive zero (0) will probable be labeled #1 sata port in the motherboard manual.

thanks - I will use a surge protector from now on! What specs should I look for in a PSU? I'm thinking of the watts delivered by the 12v rail in particular (hoping that's not a completely noob question!!)

For your system a Corsair 650W will do more than you ever need. I would stick to Corsair or Seasonic.

Sata port numbers are usually listed on the motherboard next to the ports. If not the manual for sure. It's not an absolute necessity, but can help, it seems.
